Rny with irritable bowel syndrome??

Hello, I am wondering what others experiences have been having gastric bypass with irritable bowel syndrome. My preferred surgeon does not sound too keen about performing the surgery on a patient with ibs, he feels it is too much of a risk to cause further stomach sensitivities. Should I look for a different surgeon or a different surgery? Thanx

I have ibs and had rny on may 9. My surgeon had no issues doing surgery knowing I have ibs.

He said there is no data to say that ibs interferes with rny or that ibs gets better or worse with rny.

Maybe talk to another surgeon.

Hi, I have IBS too, and just had the RnY surgery on 5/24/11, I too was worried but my surgeon didn't say no to my RnY. Maybe you should get a second opinion from a different surgeon. Good luck.

i had ibs from hell and I had no issues with getting a thumbs up for surgery by both my PCP and surgeon.

It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion.

Ever since my gaul bladder was taken out yrs ago, I have had trouble with IBS and that was the first question I asked my surgeon.  He made it clear that it probably will not cure it, but it should not make it any worse.  Judging from what I have read of all the constipation issues, it might actually improve mine.  ha ha

My IBS went away after my RNY and I had IBS from hell for 30 plus years prior to my surgery and I was only 46 at the time of my surgery

The weirdest thing is that since surgery I have not had one bout of IBS and on top of that I was severely lactose intolerant and found out (purely by accident) that dairy no longer bothers me, I had heard the surgery causes a lot of people to be lactose intolerant. I am crazy confused by this but am extremely happy to enjoy cheese and milk.

Same here as above. I have IBS and had no problems having the surgery. I still have it post-op but oddly, much less painful.
