Getting ready for my surgery this week!! Few Questions!!

Getting down to the last few days before surgery, little nervous but very excited!!  I have a few questions, o.k.  Probably the vets have heard the same questions over and over so I will ask those that have had the surgery within the last couple of months.

I do not want to go to the hospital with tons of luggage............that seems silly.  In reality what do we essentially need??

I am on a low carb, high protein diet daily............nothing  to eat or drink after midnight!!  Not happy about the 2 fleet enmas that I have to give myself the evening before!!  Gosh!!!

Any last minute advice or insight would be appreciated!!!  My surgery is early Wed morning........June 15th.  Thanks............Holly

Holly - other than your toothbrush, toothpaste,  dedorantand chapstick, nothing.

Use their gowns.  No need to mess up your own clothing in the event of an "accident".

You may want to take slippers or gripper socks to walk in.  My hospital provided gripper socks.

You'll need your ID and insurance cards.  Do not take money, jewelry, etc.

I wore the same cloths home that I wore to the hospital.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I did not use 90% of the stuff I brought. Didn't even want to be on the lap top.

I'd say a robe to walk around in, something for your feet, and chapstick. I really used the chapstick. I brought my iphone but didn't feel like dealing with it or answering texts.

Other than that, you'll be trying to sleep and/or getting woken up by people taking your bp, checking drains, etc...constantly.

Ditto to what the others said. I brought toiletries, a robe and my laptop. I used the robe to walk the halls (over my hospital gown), chapstick, and my laptop on the last day only.

My hospital provided the gripper socks and a full set of toiletries, which was nice.

Good Luck!!

I think is a matter of preference, I went to the thrift store and bought a summer type night gown just bcuz i dont like the rear air conditioning that hospital gowns offer if you know what I mean and my own tooth brush bcuz the ones that hospital gives leave much to be desired

Hi Holly, I just had my RNy surgery on June 7th. I am 5 days post op out.

Bring good slippers, chapstick ( you will need it), a comfortable robe or little soft blanket to cover yourself with in bed. I stayed in the hospital gown ( your drain will be pinned to it, and it is just easier for the nurses and YOU, to keep the gown on so they can check you, and you can use the restroom. I thought I'd be changing but I didn't.

While you're on your pre-op liquid diet, it is so important to drink as much water as you can. Drink water up until midnight before your surgery. The hardest part for me was dealing with the gas pains after the surgery, It was painful, and the ONLY way to pass it, is to walk. My doctor had me up and walking an hour after my surgery. I had to walk, and walk, and walk laps around the nurses station. Finally I day three, I began to pass gas and felt better. Ironically, I never ever in ly life talked about gas, or anything so openly, but I will because I didn't hear to much about it on these boards. I think it should be talked about.  Stay positive, concentrate on walking and moving, (especially walking now before your surgery), and once they begin to give you liquids in the hospital, take small sips, and breathe. The most important item on the tray to get used to and keep down is the protein shake and the high protein shake.

You are going to do great and I am sending good wishes and prayers your way!

Some people talk about bringing books to read and such.  I never removed any from my luggage.

Pack light, what I wore surgery morning is also what I wore home.  A loose fitting dress that didn't touch the incisions.

Things I consider a necessity:  hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, chapstick, pillow for riding home, slippers and a light robe for walking (or ask for a 2nd gown, wear it the opposite way to cover your butt when walking).

I just had surgery this week.
No luggage necessary.  I wore home the clothes I wore there.  Wear something loose and comfortable because you will be bloated.

I took a few extra underpants
lip balm
tooth brush and tooth paste
hair brush
head band
cell phone and charger
C-pap machine

Surgeons office told me to bring biotene dry mouth spray and my binder.  Did not really need either

I think the most important item is tooth brush and tooth paste.  The first day you can't drink so it feels good to brush and your hair brush for bed head.

Underscoring the part about wearing something that is very loose and/or super easy stretch. I wore a pair of pants that were comfortable and fit me fine to the hospital, and when I checked out I had to leave with them unbottoned and unzipped, because in addition to being quite bloated, I couldn't stand anything squeezing my tender abdomen. It was sore and of course very bruised. A pull-over cotton knit dress might be nice.
And I wore my slippers every day I was in the hospital. They do give you those slipper sox, but I prefer my own.

Good luck!
