I considered the DS. I asked my surgeon about it. I trust him GREATLY. He's been doing this FOREVER and has done like a gazillion surgeries. His knowledge in this area is invaluable to me. Given his knowledge, what I gained through research, and the fact that WLS would have been my very first time under the knife- I felt it best to go with a standard tried and true surgery. Open RNY was that for me. The likelihood of me traveling any where in the world and doctor's knowing exactly how to treat me should an emergency occur mattered to me. DS is not something many doctors are knowledgeable of, unfortunately. Maybe in another 5-10 years DS will be a surgery that more physicians are familiar with.

When asked this question, I usually use an automobile comparison. When buying a car, I always consider whether I can afford the maintenance. For an American, almost any mechanic can fix anything on the car. BUT if I were to get, say a LAND ROVER? Not everyone can work on that vehicle. As such, I would have to go to specific mechanics and pay a higher price. RNY = the american car DS = the OH SO pretty Land Rover!
