Those "Help!" posts - Please be specific!

The RNY forum is helpful - and it's busy!

In the last few days we have had a number of posts entitled something like, "Help!", "Help needed!", or "Help me please!"

When you post, please take a minute to give your post a title that will help the RNY community really be of assistance. Be specific in your message title! Not everyone can assist with every topic but consider titles such as:

Need help with Vitamins
Post op pain management
Help communicating with surgeon and insurance company
Help understanding nutritional plan
What kind of exercise at 8 weeks?

See the difference? These titles will attract the interest and responses of those who have experience with your particular issue and you will probably receive more valuable feedback than you will to a post simply entitled, "Help!"

I agree.  You are much more likely to get someone to view and respond to your posts if the title is specific and eludes to what you're posting about.

Heya Lynn!  I agree 100%!  I've been busy but popped on today to see what's been going on here on OH!

Hope all is well with you!

I love helping out when I can, especially with revision threads!  I know that when I was going through the early stages of revision planning and new to RNY, I was so grateful for those who answered what seemed like my never ending stream of questions.  I am very happy to pay it forward!

Putting the subject of what you need help with is only good manners. Who knows if the title of HELP isn;t a joke or something- which I have seen on other sites. HELP ended up being either a joke or a cutesy story about someone's grandkid getting their butt stuck in a toilet seat.

There have been quite a few done by the same person. She had concerns and valid as they were, a few people did suggest the search function. The questions this person was asking had been asked many times and when the search function was bought up to them- it was met with some hostility. I am the one who suggested it first I do believe and was promptly told that if I did not want to answer their questions then I should not comment and that they would ask their questions to get their own answers. Bear in mind that I had answered the question BEFORE I brought up using the SF.

I am relatively new here and I do not think I overstepped my bounds by suggesting the search function but obviously they felt I had. I like it here and although I have seen some snarkiness (thats fun by the way) it is a great place to get help. There are so many resources and so many people willing to give feedback and suggestions.

So I may overstep here but this is my suggestion to the new people- USE the search function, there may be answers to the questions you really want to know. BY all means this is NOT saying do not ask what you want to know, but use the feature because as I have found the answers you find may make another question pop into your head and you are already there at the search function so use it. It will NOT bite you.

I think the problem is the search function SUCKS. So it's not easy to use and sometimes you never find what you want.

I don't have a problem with repetitive questions (it is the nature of this community) but I agree specific subject lines go a LONG way.

Nik I was referring to certain people who post help or help me or OMG i need help and sometimes it is a quesiton that has been answered in the same page as where they are posting. I have used the search function quite a bit since coming here and if you do not put the whole question in but the subject like hair loss- do not use AM I GOING TO LOOSE MY HAIR? Just put Hair loss , it does pop up. the asker is going to be reading anyhow so reading downthrough the posts on the search suggestion page shouldnt be too hard.

Oh, I am a HUGE fan of very specific subject lines & giving the SF a spin before posting. Those practices "helps us help you", so to speak. (But, yes, I wish the SF could do things like search ONLY the RNY Forum, etc.) --- Thanks for posting about this. It's always good to learn how to better use the new-fangled technology. ;)
