My family were like that prior to surgery as well.  My mom and sister were pretty bad.  I know that they did that because they heard stories and were really concerned for me.  However, as I had surgery, they have been my biggest support.  My mom tries new recipes for me. Now that they see me losing weight and have more energy, they are realizing that this is a good thing for me.  Before surgery, I just quit talking about the surgery with them and when they brought it up, I just changed the subject and refused to talk.  Hope your family will see the light about this surgery for you.  (((hugs)))

arrghhh....I got this from my family too! I was the only big one in the family and I had lost and gained 100+ pounds a couple of times in my life and 50 pounds countless times. I just got tired of it and researched WLS and was VERY informed with my decision. Even my husband was giving me grief! He was DEMANDING I have the Lap Band if I had any surgery at all (yet he wouldn't research any of this, he learned what he knew via tv commercials)
My mother in law was the only one who supported me and stuck to my ear and telling to me to tell everyone else to buzz off.
Yes, the next thing was I was loosing weight too fast. Now 2 1/2 years later and at goal I am getting, "Can you eat that?" to everything I am putting in my mouth. I visited my folks who live a few States away this summer and the last thing she said that to me was when I was eating deviled eggs. "Come on....seriously??  Deviled eggs? That was on my soft food diet post op, shut the hell up and leave me alone."  Ok, no I didn't say that but I was thinking that in my head!

I made myself a PSA for RNY. The surgery used to be a lot different. A lot more dangerous and less effective. I made a point to educate. To tell people the facts. That the surgery is about as safe as a gallbladder surgery and is usually performed laproscopically - the same way many other lowrisk surgeries are. I told people about OH, and I was an open book about my RNY and my weight loss. It touched and inspired a lot of people. It got manyof co-workers considering RNY as well.

Actaully the more you try to tell them that you have researched and what the research has said, the more they push back with BulLarky. Had a call earlier from someone who I was praying would not call, yet she did. She started blasting me from the second I picked up the phone (all before I said HELLO..) and I put on my best Minnie voice and sai " No Habla Englaise" (sp*). She hung up and has not called back. Letting the phone ring during the day is not an option as that is when the DH is sleeping. Turning it off is not an option because of MY family calling (I have an aunt who is very ill). or any doctors and such calling- so have to leave the ringer on. YEP I have been dealing with it.

As for if his family have any overweight people in it, sure does- his one sister in law. She is gunna be the one I tangle with when the time comes. I admire her that she is happy being what she refers to as the fat puppy gal, but she can be happy with herself does not mean I am happy with being a fat puppy gal myself. It will be all good though. I have learned that negativity is ingrained in some people from birth. It is all in how you handle it. His mom has pretty much backed off because I told her that when SHE can walk a mile in MY shoes and back and then tell me I am doing this for an easy out or that lovley line of more exercise, less food does work......THEN and only then will she be able to tell me what I should and should not do.

I told my family what was really going on, but told my in-laws I was having my gall bladder removed (which wasn't entirely untrue because my surgeon does that during the procedure)
