Kombucha- do you drink it?
I was wondering if there are folks who are drinking kombucha tea after their surgeries? I am about 6 months out from surgery and seem to tolerate small amounts of carbonated beverages fine (I haven't ever tried drinking an entire can or glass of anything carbonated). My concern about drinking kombucha was about the carbonation. I tend to believe that fermented foods (yogurt, keffir, etc) provide beneficial bacteria to our digestive systems that we especially need after RNY. This seems to be supported by studies that indicate that regular use of probiotics and/or consuming yogurt with active cultures results in higher B-vitamin levels in post-op RNY patients.
I was interested in making my own using the directions found in this article:

Thanks for your input!

I agree with you that it absolutely is great for the digestive system! I make my own, and have for two years. I haven't had surgery yet as my surgery is next week. The only thing I think you will have to worry about is the sugar..(in my kombucha I use organic sugar). I am hoping to be able to drink some after surgery as well, so interested in any responses to this thread!
As I understand it, almost all of the sugar is used by the yeast and bacteria in the SCOBY or "mother" that is used to ferment the tea. So, I don't think the residual sugar is a problem- I've read that kombucha is perfectly safe for diabetics. I was thinking I could try stevia to sweeten it after brewing, if needed (just in each glass or bottle, NOT in the brewing container).
