For some it's a slippery slope because it was something they were hooked on pre op. I've heard it can lead to increased appetite for some people. The bubbles make some uncomfortable and gassy. When I do drink diet side I put it in a lot of ice and let it sit for a few to cut down on the carbonation. It doesn't bother a lot of people though. I've been drinking diet sprite and ginger ale to help with upset tummy or nausea lately.

You can have it if you want.  The carbonation gives some people painful gas but others are just fine with it.  It doesn't bother me at all.  Studies have also shown that the artificial sweetener in diet sodas increase the appetite.

Carbonated drinks won't damage or stretch your pouch or anything like that, though.

Yeah, they did a study (and unfortunately I didn't bookmark it can't remember where or how I found it) specifically with diet soda.  They gave diet soda to a bunch of rats and then had another group of rats they did not give diet soda to.  Over a period of a couple weeks, the rats that got the diet soda increased the amount of food they ate significantly.  I can't remember by what percent, but it was a lot.  The researchers believed or determined that it was the artificial sweetener in the diet soda that made the rats eat more.  Now that I think about it, I'm not sure how they knew it was the sweetener, not one of the many other chemicals in the soda.  But they stated that it was because of the sweetener.

Yeah, you can do equal or splenda post op.  I usually use splenda when I need sugar in something at home but a lot of sugar free things I buy at the store have other kinds of artificial sweetener.  I don't know if some types are better than others or what the differences really are and I don't have a preference for one over another.

I guess if you use a lot of artificial sweetener, it would be good to pay attention and see if it's making you want to eat more.

I just made the switch to Stevia recently and LOVE it. It's an option for you if you're concerned about the appetite increase or the artificial chemicals. I grew it this summer and muddled the fresh into drinks and such but now I'm on to the pre-packaged stuff.

What is stevia exactly?  Is it an herb?  How many calories does it have, and can you use it in place of sugar in recipes and stuff?

Stevia is an herb. It is a zero calorie product as the body can’t metabolize the glycosides from it. I’ve baked with it and even used it to make Fig Preserves last weekend with great results. I have 3 of the liquids that are great to add with tea, coffee or yogurt. I absolutely love it. It doesn't fall apart baking like Splenda does.. I think it's more versatile.

I was just googling it.  That sounds really interesting.  I'll have to try some.  Would it be with the sugar and Splenda and stuff at the store?  When you bake with it, do you use the same amount as you would use sugar?   Like if the recipe called for one cup of sugar, would you use one cup of Stevia?
