Am I the only one???

I wish I could exercise!!! You should take your kids and do activities with them...consider thier future habits and health as a form of motivation. As yourself what it is you are teaching them after putting them through your surgery and lifestyle change and not feeling that their time is valuable enough to get moving. I want you to succeed, and lets face it, your lack of self control and motivation is most likely what landed you in the obesity corner anyway... and even if it was genetics you still run a risk of making it not work...so if you don't want to go back to that then move forward...physically...and take your family along for the ride, it can only make your family unit stronger...so what do you have to lose ...except weight,

I cannot do the type of excercise that you can. Exertion = severe pain for me due to variations in spinal fluid. I do however walk daily since that is what I can do at this time. You owe yourself and your family at least that.

I know that I am being hard on you and if not excersising works for others than so be it...but your body may react differently than her body...is it worth taking the chance??? My lack of exercise to maintain muscle has cost me dearly over time with a dislocation of a shoulder and both of my hips. I am not gaining weight, but man do I wish I could do more, simply because of that.

My best advice...get moving!

I, too, hate to exercise.  I don't mind lifting weights but I hate cardio.  But I have found that the farther out I am, the more I can't sit still.  I try to sit and read and I can only do it for about 15 minutes then I have to move around, do something.  I am outside a lot with the kids, playing in the grass and walking in the yard.  I am rarely still.  I wonder, though, if I would have lost more at this point if I were doing the cardio that my MD wants me to do.

So no, you are not alone.

(there is no medical reason holding me back either)

I know, I know.... Some will say if you would start exercising I would have motivation... Tried that, been there done that....  Still no change...

I have 3 kids work full-time in a crazy doctors office and am moving all day long.  I have no desire to get up early.... and am too exhausted when I get home.  At night and the weekends are with my kids and husband...

I have a feeling I am really jeopardizing my results... I have a follow up appt with my Doc on Tuesday and he is NOT going to be happy when I confess I have not been exercising....

I guess I am willing to hear any thoughts.... suggestions..... words of wisdom/encouragement....

I am in the same boat. I lack motivation to exercise. I am just beginning the journey and have to lose 25 lbs before surgery. My surgeon requires all his patients to lose that amount. I have an appt with my Nut, Psych, and surgeon all on the same day August 17th beginning at 8 am.

I think my chronic pain has a lot to do with my motivation, I dread hurting worse than I have too. But you know the ol` saying " No pain no gain", except in my case its "No pain no loss". (ha)! I refuse to have the surgery until I have all my ducks in a row, I eat very healthy and have since a bowel resection in 98. I have always taken supplements like a multi vitamin, B12, D3, Potassium, B complex, and Vit. C for years now and it has become habit. In addition, I have always drank a protein shake every day because I cant find enough foods that contain protein that I like. The last thing for me to get a grip on is my exercise. I quit smoking cold turkey 3 years ago. (never looked back). In 2004 I became disable and refused to except it so I went back to college and obtained an associates in IT/Programming, returned and I will graduate this year with a bachelors in IT/Web development. I just struggle with motivation to exercise and I have no idea why. Blahhh! (lol) Just like a Chihuahua has to find its bark, I am sure somehow, we will find our motivation. We can do it!!

Have a blessed day.

Jacqueline, Thank you for your post. I am sorry to see you have the limitations you do. I can't imagine. I am very active w my children and they are all in sports and we are always busy doing things out n about. My children -15,12 & 6- are all skinny, eat well, and busy busy busy... With sports, jumping on the tramp, riding bikes going for walks, playing at the park. I guess I don't want people to think we all just sit n watch TV. My concern was that I don't do the "traditional" workout sessions. I do have an elliptical like I said in previous posts... I just don't have the energy for that after everything else. AND... I do NOT like that exercise regime... But as I said before I'm busy... N am hoping that works for me at this point.

This is not from personal experience, since I am pre-op and unable to exercise at this time... but on another one of my groups, people are raving about using the rebounder (mini trampoline.) Some of them say it is a lot of fun. I think that once I can, I might find a cheap one and try it out. They say you only have to do a few minutes, a few times a day.

Maybe go to Walmart and try bouncing on the display model, to see if it is any fun? I bet the kids would like it too. :)

I never liked it either, but now I enjoy it.  I will walk at least a mile at work during lunch.  3 x's a week I go to an aqua zumba class that I love.  I then sit for about 15 mins in the hot tub, shower, and then come home all relaxed.  The other 2 days I do my arm exercises that my excercise physiologist gave me at home with arm weights.  The weekends are my free time with my family.

I was like you.  I hated exercising and fought it every chance I could.  I joined Curves after my first WLS and paid for a year and went faithfully for a year and once it was over so was I.
I have lost all my excess weight (and more) without hardly any exercise but my doctors all nag me about it because I suffer from chronic, treatment resistant depression.  After months of nagging I finally joined my local community center and paid for a year.  I have been going to the easies****er aerobics class they have.  I am by far the youngest person in the class and I am 53.  It humbles me because these people are making an effort and trying to stay active and here I was trying to avoid it.  I think they do it for the social aspect as much as the physical part but they are dedicated and they are doing it.
I also bought a bike.  Well, I am on 3 now.  I think I spend more time looking at bikes and fixing them up then riding them but I have committed to riding at least 30 minutes a day and to try to build my time and endurance up.  I can feel how weak my legs are just trying to pedal.  That is why I went from a single speed cruiser to a 7 speed cruiser to a 21 speed mountain bike, so I wouldn't have to work so hard to pedal.
I have to admit, in spite of myself, that I am enjoying being more active.  And, damn them to hell, my doctors were right, I do feel better.  I hope I am able to keep this up when the bad weather hits.  I may have to buy an exercise bike or one of those things you use with your bike so you can ride it indoors.
I go to my water aerobics class in the morning after I take my daughter to school and it helps me start my day.  I have been riding in the afternoons and it does help me deal with stress.
I understand that you have a busy schedule and you may not have time for exercise but if you can, buy a bike (they are so cheap on Craigslist.  I bought 2 brand new bikes for $50.  A lot of people seem to buy them with good intentions and then never use them and sell them cheap so they don't have to be reminded about it).  Maybe you and your family can go on bike rides.  I have been trying to talk my daughter into riding with me, hence the multiple bikes, but so far she refuses.
Good luck to you.
