I add lemonade to mine too - def adds to it

edit: Just saw you already tried that! Also -for vanilla and chocolate -I like to add decaf coffee grounds -I think it masks the protein and always a straw!

I'm using a straw and I am pre-op, but I notice many people saying we should not use a straw post op.

I love using straws so am confused about that part.

Doctors differ on this but I believe it all comes down to if you have a problem with taking in extra air and giving you gas which could be uncomfortable. That hasn't happened to me.

The reason for No STRAWS is that you take air into your stomach with a Straw. That could stretch out your pouch. To this day I do not use a straw or drink carbonated anything for the same reason. I'm certain the dietician covered this in her session. I use Tervis Tumblers with a a sippy lid on it! Keeps things cold and I carry it everywhere to ensure I get enough fluids. Hope this helps

Drinking from straws will not stretch the pouch, neither will carbonated drinks.  The carbonation may make you feel uncomfortable.  There is absolutely no studies proving a straw or carbonation will stretch the pouch.

Think of your pouch as a funnel, what goes in will come out.  The food or liquid is not going to stay in your pouch and stretch it.

Perhaps you are so far out you don't remember the good advice. I trust my doctor and he says no straws. I am only about 1 year out and found that giving up carbonated beverages and straws is no big deal. Have you kept all your weight off? There is a study about carbonated and stretching. Will email the link to you!

Lauren W:  quoting you since you blocked me.

Perhaps you are so far out you don't remember the good advice. Perhaps I'm not too far out to remember good advice, I was stating the obvious from YEARS of experience on OH and researching information.  The RNY configuration is like a funnel, what goes in MUST come out and it will.  There are NO proven studies that have EVER been posted on OH to confirm that carbonated drinks and straws will stretch the pouch.

I trust my doctor and he says no straws. I am only about 1 year out and found that giving up carbonated beverages and straws is no big deal.

I'm glad you trust your surgeon, I trust mine too or I wouldn't have let him cut on me.  I never said giving up carbonated beverages and straws was a big deal.  I do drink them NOW occasionally (diet sodas) and use a straw quiet often.  Some post-ops get discomfort for carbonation, others do not; again there is no proof these stretch the pouch.

Have you kept all your weight off?

In fact I HAVE kept all my weight off at 6 years out.  What does THAT have to do with drinking carbonated drinks or using a straw.  Are you trying to prove I've stretched my pouch?  Wrong, I haven't in fact my pouch is considered super small for someone 6 years out.  Try again.

There is a study about carbonated and stretching. Will email the link to you!
I'd like you to post the study, who did it, how many participated in it, etc.  I'm sure many of us would like to see a study if ones finally been done.  In the 6+ years I've been here, the carbonation/straw debate has gone on with no support that it will in fact stretch the pouch.

And BTW I'm responding to myself since LaurenW blocked me after she responded, if anyone feels inclined to quote me so she can see my response feel free.

Lauren, you are still considered a new post-op.........don't get too ****y you never know where you may need help in the future.

I bought the big barrel of Caribean Cooler Nectar, and I too wasn''t too fond of it until I mixed in a lttle fruit punch crystal light. It turns a lovely shade of purple!

One thing that I have found is if you mix the shakes the night before, the mix has a chance to disolve, and you are less likely to have those nasty chewy chunks and no foamy froth on top from using your blender.

I recently switched brands to 4 ever fit - fruit blast. I think they are really good and they mix up really smooth in my opinion.

Prior to gastric bypass, I did a program called HMR. Let me just tell you, these shakes in my opionon are the most delicious shakes. Unfortunately they aren't the best for post-op, but if you can drink them pre-op, you won't have to worry about not liking them after because you will need to switch to something with a bit more protein!! If I could drink them now, I would....

Regardless, good luck! It is all trial and error until you find your protein match!

I did not like any of the nectars, I still do not.  I use Unjury Chocolate protein powder.  I mix it up with a teaspoon of sugar free international coffee "french vanilla" and two teaspoons of sugar free carmel syrup.  I blend it with lots of ice and water and it comes pretty close to tasting like a starbucks double chocolately chip frappe without the mini chocolate chips.
