Sleep Apnea Mouth Gaurd and POOP (yes, I said poop) Breath
Hey friends- First off, does anyone here use a mouthgaurd for sleep apnea? I posted in the sleep apnea forum but didn't get any bites. Just curious.
Secondly, what the heck is up with the nasty poop breath in the morning? It's disgusting! It usually goes away after a thourough brushing of my teeth but my bigger problem comes in with the mouthgaurd I wear for my sleep apnea (similar to a grinding mouthgaurd). It "caught" that morning poop breath smell and I CANNOT get it out. I faithfully bru**** each morning with soap and then soak it all day in denture cleaner but it still smells like poop! You can imagine what a problem that causes, as how would you like to put something that smells like poop into your mouth. EWWWW!
I'm curious what causes the "poop" smell but even more desperate for any ideas to get the smell out of my nightgaurd! Please! Give me some suggestions!

Maybe try soaking it in some vinegar and water? And then brushing it with some minty fresh toothpaste?

Kelly's answer is great...That is what my fiance does. The vinegar works, but if you don't bru**** afterwards with toothpaste, make sure you rinse it very well because the vinegar is bad for your tooth enamel, Also, you should be very careful with the denture cleaner because it may break down and destroy your guard. Actually that denture cleaner is not that great for dentures either!
Not sure what causes the awful breath, but my fiance has the same problem. His breath is FEROCIOUS in the morning!

I have not used a mouth guard, but did use a retainer after my braces were off.
I suggest trying a mint fresh Listerine or its generic equivalent. Kills germs and deposits mouth-friendly fragrance in the process.
I would clean it well with a toothbrush and toothpaste & rinse well, then soak it in a container filled with strong but tasty mouthwash until next wear.
Hope that helps.

I don't use a mouth guard for sleep apnea but I do use a bite guard at night. When I take it out in the morning I brush my teeth and the bite guard, then I store it in water with a bit of mouthwash added. I haven't tasted much poop in my life...I manage to keep my mouth closed when the poop is flying, lol, but my bite guard does get a bad taste to it at times and this seems to help. I also do the denture cleaner tablets on it occasionally just to be sure it is as clean as possible.

Good morning dragon breath- kidding.
I am just going to guess here. I forgot to look at how far out you are. If your early out the taste/smell you may be experiencing could be ketosis. It happens as our fat starts melting away. This can last a month or more. I am not sure it goes away or if it is just less noticeable. I carried mints with me during that period of time. I work in a classroom and didn't want to kill the students. LOL however most of them come with dragon breath anyways and wouldn't have noticed.

I don't have any suggestions for the mouthguard but I also have the nasty breath. It could be the ketosis the other poster mentioned but I have noticed a really nasty taste in my mouth if I eat a Celebrate Chewy bite (calcium citrate) before bed and don't brush my teeth after eating it (bad I know). But anyways, I am wondering if it has something to do with the sugar alcohols? Or maybe it might be from the whey in our protein drinks. I dunno...
