first of all let me say that ive done my research on both for 2 yrs now, i crossed out the lap band!!!  but im not really sure which one to go with, my surgery consult is in 3 weeks. im 27yrs old, my HW was 348lbs, CW is 312lbs, im 5'2, NO health problems, day of surgery i plan to be around 290 or 280(surgery should be end of oct 2011).....so i dont want to set myself up for failure if i choose the sleeve but i also dont like the malabsorption that comes along with the rny, also they say you lose more weight with the rny than the sleeve. what are your opinions or suggestions for someone my size and with no health issues? glad to get your feedback on it

Personally, I would go for the sleeve if my insurance would cover it.  I am very happy with my RNY but I don't like the fact that I can't take NSAIDS and I don't like the vitamin deficiencies that are so common with RNY.

When you say "they say you lose more with RNY," who is they?  What I have heard the most is that weight loss tends to be slower with the sleeve, but that patients tend to lose about the same amount in the end.

Of course, when you see your surgeon you can ask what surgery he recommends for you, and why.

Hi I am very happy that I had the RNY. If I had to do it all overy I would still pick the RNY over the sleeve.

I agree with everything Kelly said.  My surgeon said sleeve patients lose "about" the same, but as with everything else, it depends upon you the patient.  I don't like the fact I cannot take NSAIDs, if needed, and the bowel issues are a great concern for me.  I could have had the sleeve but did not do enough research on it.  My surgeon also said the sleeve is the first step to a DS, so if there was weight regain, the second stage could be performed thus easily converting to a DS.  I was 54 when I had surgery, so for me I felt like this was it.  I was too old to think about regain and more surgery.  If I were younger, might have more children, etc., absolutely that additional benefit would have made the sleeve even that more attractive to me.

First off, Congrats on the significant weight loss that you are already seeing I know it is difficult, and you've made some great changes.

I recommend that you choose a good surgeon with a lot of experience, and he/she can provide the best recommendation based on your goals, your particular health profile and risks. Each patient is different -  I had a nice long discussion with my doctor, and although I'm a lower BMI, sleeve would have made some of my particular health risks worse, so it was RNY for me.

Yes, Congrats....I am very new (2 months out) but like you, I did lots of research.  I am very happy with my RNY.  One of the main reason that I chose RNY over the sleeve is that I felt very uncomfortable with "throwing away" the remaining stomach with the sleeve.
