Still makes them just a group and it also doesn't make them any where close to being the sole or even main group for bariatric surgeons.  Please, they are one of what 100+ formal groups?   Oh, and actually the head surgeon of my practice sits on their board so I wonder what that says about the under 3k requirements?

I understand you're not a doctor.  I'm not a doctor either, but I am able to read and understand the ASMBS guidelines, articles in medical journals, etc.  I am also able to understand the difference between a doctor saying "I think 5000 mg is best" and one saying "the recent study at XYZ University found that RNY patients that got less than 5000 mg has these particular problems."

Go with whatever recommendations (because doctors don't make requirements, they make recommendations, patients get to decide whether or not to follow them) you believe is best for you, by all means.  I'm not trying to talk you into taking less than 5000 mg calcium if that is how much you want to take.  I just wanted to know what you were basing that number on so I could decide for myself if I should take more than the 1500-2000 mg recommended by the ASMBS.  But it seems you are not basing that number on science, you're just basing it on what some surgeons that practice in your area recommend.  And you certainly have the right to make your decisions based on anything you like.  I like to base mine on science so i thought I'd ask you if you could point me to the science behind yours.

I do have one more question.

Since we can only absorb about 500 mg at a time, getting  5000 mg would mean taking TEN doses a day.  And in order to take them two hours apart, it would take 20 HOURS to get all your calcium.  Then you'd need to wait two more hours to take your iron.  So when do you sleep?

Had to check that and i am not sure where you're getting a 500 max absorbtion from, but if that were the case, all of us would have to consume 4 dosages a day of even the lower supplements.  I'm not going to continue to debate it with you since doctors and DPMs state other numbers and they know more than us.  But I am sure that your 500 max has to be wrong or none of would get what we need a day even at the lower dosage amount.  We'll have to agree to disagree on this.

Oh, I'm happy to share my sources.  I am getting the 500 mg at a time from the National Institutes of Health, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and Harvard Medical School.  I suppose they could all be wrong, but that seems unlikely to me.

I'm guessing you don't wanna share your sources that say we can absorb more than 500 mg at a time?

Oh, and lots of us get 1500-2000 mg a day in three or four doses.  That is quite doable.

The 500 still sounds like junk.  If that were the case virtually all of us are taking a lot of calcium that we can never absorb.  I'm thinking the numbers are wrong.  Otherwise, almost all of our doctors are having as take calcium that is basically being dumped out of our bodies because we can't absorb them.  Sorry, don't believe the number or that they are correct.  Yes, my sources are multiple doctors, DPMs, and Nuts.  I'm going to stop now because you're ******g me off by trying to force inaccurate junk on here as scientfic facts.  You say Harvard...care to show the actually study and date of the study...maybe 1978?  lol

I did not see a study conducted by Harvard.  I saw an article on their website but it did not say what study they were basing that information on.  I feel that is a reputable enough source, but you are of course free to disagree.  It sounds like you will not accept information from any source other than some nameless doctors and nuts.

I just found the Harvard study and guess what.  The recommended daily intake recommended is 2900mg daily and the 500mg is a standard rny dosage, but that you need more even though above 500mg the absroption rate drops to 80-90% between 600mg and 1000mg per dose.  The info said the study was done in 1998 so that is 13 years old as well.  I'm thinking that in 13 years they've found out more information.  Google it please for yourself.
