Another trip to the hospital

On Thursday I was at the gym doing my routine and got this really sharp shooting pain in my abdomen, decided to take it easy and walked out to my car to get my wallet to go back inside to get a protein drink (I always do this, because I do NOT liek working out then driving home to mix one up). Well I took a sip and OMG I had to make a very quick beeline for the bathroom. I was sicker than sick. Hubby took me to the surgeons office and they took some readings. I was dehydrated, and also had an ULCER. Yep two weeks out and had an ulcer (lovely, NOT!!!).
They got me checked in to the hospital where I was bagged on a full IV mixture of vitamins and ALMOST given a feeding tube. I refused the feeding tube. I was dehydrated because I had a small leak that was going into the lower portion of the "dead" stomach. Well that has been fixed. The ulcer is being taken care of with Karafate(nasty ****). I am home now, came home yesterday and glad to be home. So far I have gotten about 24oz in and I feel OK. Not great but ok. I got the grumblies in my tummy right now but that is something a lot of us have to live with.

I just had an ulcer about a month ago... I feel your pain.  Carafate is nasty but it helps heal the ulcer.  mine perforated and I was in the hospital for 5 days  on IV with nothing by mouth for over a week.

dehydration had landed me in the ER a couple of times over the last two years... once I get dehydrated I can't catch up... so keep trying to drink as much as possible.

Sorry you are having a tough time. But I will have to say, I have been on Carafate for the last 6 weeks for an ulcer. They want me on it for 2 more before I go off the stuff. It may taste bad, but that stuff is a godsend! Hopefully it will work as well for you as it has for me. Best of luck!

sorry you went through this but I am a bit confused.  You said you went to the surgeons office and he did some readings and determined you were dehydrated and had an ulcer?  how did he determine all this?  In order to determine dehydration, you need blood tests and to determine an ulcer, you to do an endoscopy.  Did he do an upper GI or barrium swallow to diagnose the leak? I am not getting how all this was diagnosed in his office.  Did you have surgery to fix the leak?  Leaks usually require emergency surgery.

As far as the ulcer goes - are you taking a PPI to go with the carafate?  I did they test you for HPylori?  a large majority of ulcers are caused by bacteria and need antibiotics and if not tested to see if you have hpylori via endoscopy, you won't know.  Without treatment with antibiotics for an ucler due to hpylori, the ulcer will never heal.  If it is due to NSAID use, then you just need karafate and a PPI.  Did they give you IV toradol while you were in the hospital postop?  This is very common and can cause  ulcers.  Make sure you take a PPI for atleast a year and since you got an ulcer so early out, you may need to take one indefinitely
