Vitamin Question..Celebrate brand or Bariatric Fusion
Please increase your B12 - a b12 level of 600 is dangerously low. Anything below 500 puts you at risk for nerve damage and if it stays below long enough, it can become permanent. The b12 in your celebrate is useless. You can't absorb any B12 from a pill -if it isnt' a sublingual or injection - it is useless. I am not sure what dose you are taking but you need to take it daily and please dont' forget - it is important. We have had people on here fail to see importance of B12 and ended up with nerve damage and brain damage. Now they can't walk or think clearly - difficulty speaking. It is that important. You also need vitamin B1 - 100mg daily - it also affects the nerves.
You say you take your iron from either celebrate or bariatric advantage - check the ingredients - make sure it is carbonyl iron - not all of them do. If it has ferrous iron, then you can't absorb it. You also need 200mg of vitamin C for every 30mg of iron.
What about Dry D3?

I'm a pre-op overachiever and have been testing massive samples; comparing taste, amount of vitamins and price. By far I have liked Celebrate the best and I won't have to eat massive amounts to get all my recommended nutrients. More than anything, I like the way their stuff tastes. I know that may change after surgery, but it's a good place to start! Good luck with your search!
don;t bother with bariatric fusion - you need to take 8 per day, not 4. You need 200% of the daily values which requires 2 tablets, 4 times per day. By doing that, you still need to take other vitamins. The calcium is very confusing because it is a mixture of calcium carbonate and calcium citrate - we don't absorb calcium carbonate, so you have no idea how much calcium you are actually getting. The B12 you won't absorb because it is in a tablet. You need it to be in a sublingual or injection. You no longer have the part of your stomach functioning that makes intrinsic factor to allow you to absorb B12. So, the B12 in this is useless. The iron is also useless since we can't absorb any iron with ferrous in the name. You should be taking a PPI to prevent ulcers and reflux - ferrous irons need a highly acidic environment to be absorbed plus after an RNY - most pouches don't produce acid anymore, or atleast much. The vitamin D3 isn't dry and isn't enough. The vitamin B1 also isn't enough.
There is no such thing as a multi vitamin being the only pill you will have to take. It just can't happen. You have to know going into this surgery that you are going to have to take a ****load of supplements.
Not taking vitamin is not an option. Not taking calcium and vitamin D will cause osteoporosis, broken bones and teeth. Not taking vitamin B1 and B12 will cause nerve damage and if left long enough it becomes permanent and we have had a few patients that ended up with brain damage and in wheel chairs because they could no longer walk due to the nerve damage. Not taking iron can cause severe anemia, levels get low enough requiring blood transfusions. Vitamin supplementation is a serious thing and unfortunately surgeons have very little training in this area. They are surgeons and they are trained to cut. I actually wouldnt' want my surgeon spending that much time in class learning about all these vitamins when he could be learning more about my insides. That is why employ nutritionist that have the training. Unfortunatley, they dont' all high nutritionists with the best backgrounds. I personally have a great nutriotionist and she did recommend all the correct supplements. I actually have 2 nutritionists, one at the surgeons office and one at my Endocrinologists office.
I wish you the best and hope that you find it in you to take the advise that we are giving you. We have lived the experience and know what we are talking about. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me
For a multi -you need to take 2 multis per day - you can either take centrum silver chewables, celebrate or bariatric advantage. These all have the necessary items needed in a multi and taken 2 times per day gives you what you need - 200%. To go with that - you need:
calcium citrate - 1500-2000mg per day in 3-4 daily doses no more than 650mg at a time and not within 2-4 hours of your iron or thyroid medication. The calcium doses need to be atleast 2 hours apart. You can get chewables from bariatric advantage or celebrate - I personally love the cherry lozenges (500mg each - 3-4 per day) from bariatric advantage or the raspberry chewies (250mg - 2 at a time, 3-4 times per day) also from bariatric advantage or you can take a combination of the 2. If you want tablets, get citrical - either maximums or petites. The maximums you need to take 2 at a time, 3 times per day. The petites, you need to take 3 at a time, 3 times per day.
B12 - sublinguals - minimum of 1000mcg daily - many need alot more but adjust based on your labs or injections.
vitamin D3 - dry D3 - minimum of 5,000 units of Dry D3 from vitalady.com - most need megadoses - 50,000units a few times per week but you need your labs to know your levels.
iron - carbonyl iron from vitalady.com - this is highly absorbable and not constipating. They come in 25mg chewables or 60mg capsules. The 60mg capsules have the necessary vitamin C in them to aid in absorbtion. If you take the chewables, you must get vitamin C chewables to take with them - 200mg of vitamin C per 30mg of iron. My NUT starts all patients off with 120-150mg of iron.
vitamin B1 - 100mg daily
