Hi everyone-
Today is only my second day of the preop diet and I feel like crap.  Has anyone else had this problem? Yesterday I had a bad headache and I was weak and nauseous.  I don't know if it's my body getting used to this or if I just have a virus or something.....

I just hate this!!! I can't believe I am so damn cranky already....

It's your body coming off the carbs and sugar.  I had headaches for the first two days....and I was a ***** (even more than usual).  After about day three....the headaches went away and I felt fine.  Don't worry...it gets better.

Hi Andrea,

Hillary is likely to be right about your having a reaction to the lack of sugar. That said, it might help to know why they have you on this program. Bariatric surgery is normally performed with the patient in a 'standing' position, where the operating table rotates you into a 'standing' position. The liver sits above the stomach and when you are standing, it literally sits on top of your stomach. Many obese patients have some level of fatty liver disease which means that the liver is enlarged and it makes it hard for the surgeon to maneuver during surgery. When you go onto a strict diet and start losing weight, your liver is the first to start shrinking as it loses some of it's fat reserves. This is a big help to you during surgery because it makes easier for the surgeon and safer for you.

If the headache, weakness and nausea continue, please contact your Dr.

hey girl...

I literally posted this same question on my day #2 also..

My surgeon said it's normal. It's a huge drop in your blood sugar (especially if you had last meals and binged before the liquid diet). Your body is also in detox mode.

Trust me... by day 4 I was fine! Day 2 and 3 were the worst (for me anyway). You will probably feel like you have a nasty flu...

thanks so much for the info ladies!!

I am glad to hear other people experienced the same thing- I am sure it will be temporary.  I was thinking I would be hungry but didn't consider I would feel like crap!

The information about surgery was cool too.  I knew they had to shrink the liver but I didn't know it actually sits in the stomach and that I may be in the standing position- pretty neat!!!

The liquid diet is awful! I felt so drowsy/sleepy for the first 3 or 4 days but it does get better. Just remember it's not forever & it will be worth it in the long run! My surgeon called it a "rite of passage" - good luck!
