RNY on 05/29/12
I've been reading that some surgeons will do a panniculectomy with the RNY.  Anyone had this done?  I don't see my surgeon until November so I don't know if he'll do it.  I feel like iet would be great to get a good 10 lbs of fat and skin removed.

I've not see any posts about surgeons doing this "double surgery" today.  My wife had a gastic wt loss surgery in 1980, where she had a large amount of lose skin removed around her mid section. She had something like 56 staples around her mid section, leaving only a couple of inches of intact skin by her spine.  First time I'd ever heard of a TENS unit, that her surgeon used for pain, so patients could get up and move a day after surgery.  Panni surgery is usually done only with good documentation about treatment for fungal infections, yeast infections, rashes, lose skin that impedes walking or ability to exercise, etc. It takes photos, script used, well documented history of treatment by your doctors, and then would have to be approved by your insurance company.  Of the hundreds of post ops I know, I'm only aware of one band patient who had the panni.  You really don't want the procedure done at date of wt loss surgery. As you lose wt from surgery, you'll have more lose skin, and likely want another procedure for lose skin in a year or so post op. DAVE

my surgeon suggested that for me but i decided against it because i though it would be too much to go thru and im glad i did because i ended up with pnomonia and i cant imagine dealing with that too . its bad enough im still dealing with nausea and recovering from the pnomonia too and im 7 weeks out . i would not recommended doing that its hard enough recovering from the RNY!

I would do it after you get to goal (or as close to goal as you can) -- because in addition to taking care of the medical issues, a panniculectomy can be cosmetic.  I love my new tummy.  It would have been disappointing to go through the surgery to ultimately have a poor result.

I can't imagine doing both together or why anyone would!?  If you had them both at once, you'd lose weight and then have to have the panniculectomy repeated at some point because it would get loose and flabby and saggy again!  I had tummy tuck when I reached goal and my plastic surgeon told me if I lose 20 lbs I may have to have it tightened again!
