I have finally gotten my first head cold since surgery in June. I used to take Nyquil but am worried about the alcohol content. What do you take for medicine when you are sick? Thanks!

With Nyquil and many cold meds, the concern isn't the alcohol as much
as it is the NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory(s)). They can
cause ulceration in your stomach so those with RNY should not take
them. Some common NSAID names are aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen,
and Aleve. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is not an NSAID and is safe for
us to use. I would talk to the pharmacist at your drug store and have
him tell you which cold medicines do not contain NSAIDs. Then you
can try them and see which one works best for you.

Ugh. I hate colds. It might cost you a little more at the pharmacy, but I would suggest treating your symptoms separately. For example, if you are congested, just take a decongestant. If it's more of an allergy thing, take an antihistime.

If you have a cough, there are diabetic cough syrups on the market. No alcohol or sugar.

Feel better!!!

I think that Nyquil only has acetaminophen in it. Check the label, but I don't think that there in an NSAID in there. Get feeling better.

My doctor told me that any of the Tylenol brand cold medicines would be fine to take.
