Colonoscopy update (long)
So...I ended up NOT having my colonoscopy after all that prep! I am kinda irritated with the whole ordeal. I had to do a clear liquid diet all weekend - no food. Then on Sunday afternoon I started the prep. I could not drink 8 oz every 10-15 minutes. It took me like an hour to drink 2 cups. I drank and drank that stuff all night and finally quit at midnight when they told me to not have anything to eat or drink after midnight. At that point I had still only drank a little more than 1/2 of that big jug. I ended up going to the bathroom all night long, about every 1.5 hrs or so and when my alarm went off at 4:30 AM (had to be at hospital by 6:30 and I live 45 mins away from hospital) I was still having to go to the bathroom and it still wasn't running clear if you know what I mean (tmi). I knew I wasn't gonna be able to make the 45 min drive to the hospital without having to go to the bathroom and there is no where to stop along the way (very rural area). So I called the hospital to let them know what was going on. Come to find out, the nurse told me I should've began drinking that stuff first thing in the morning because it works differently with RNY people and because we can't gulp it down. They told me if I could just get to the hospital they could give me an enema... I am like, ah hell no. After all I had already been through, I was not having an enema and besides, was I supposed to just sh*t myself on the way to the hospital? (excuse my language). So I ended up canceling the procedure after all the liquid diet and bowel prep. I am not happy. Why in the hell didn't they tell me to start drinking the stuff in the morning? I asked her why they couldn't just give me the pills and she told me they took those pills off the market because they have been linked to liver damage. I asked about the movi-prep that only has to be drank 2x (one glass at 4 PM and another at 8:00 PM) and she told me they like to use the "go lytley" because it works better. I also feel guilty that I did not have the procedure done and I missed a day of work because of it. I don't want to go through the prep again but worry that my doc will be upset that I didn't have it done. I have a very busy schedule and don't know when I will have another opportunity to have it done again because I don't want to miss more work and because my doc usually only does these on Fridays which means I would have to miss 2 days of work if I have to start the prep in the morning. So why is this making feel depressed? For the first time since surgery I really, really want to eat to make myself feel better. I haven't but I sure do want to. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading.
Oh, I would be so annoyed! Your doc may be upset that you didn't get the procedure done, but hopefully he is upset at whomever was supposed to tell you when to start the bowel prep. That person really screwed up. Actually, I think I would contact that person's supervisor and complain.
I'm assuming you need to get it done, so you'll have to figure out a way to schedule it. Does your doc only do them on Fridays or just usually only do them on Friday? Is there any chance of him doing it on another day that would work better for your schedule? And does it have to be done by your doc, or could he possibly refer you to a gastroenterologist who does it on a day that would work better for you?

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
Funny thing is Kelly, is that this doc did my RNY too! You think he would have known that I wouldn't be able to do the prep like a person with a normal stomach. His nurse told me, plus it's on the paperwork they gave me, to start the bowel prep at 2:00 PM the day before the procedure. When they scheduled me for the procedure they told me he only does them on Fridays. It had been scheduled for this past Friday the 28th but they called me and rescheduled because they said the doc couldn't do it that day. The next available Friday appt was in mid-November and my Oncologist wanted it done before my next appt with her at the end of Nov. I originally was going to schedule with a gastro doc but when I told my RNY surgeon's office, they told me he could do it for me. I figured since I already knew him and was comfortable with him, I would just go ahead and let him do it. If they can't accomodate my schedule, I might have to schedule with another doc. I really, really don't want to go through this again. It was really bad and I had a hard time drinking that stuff, it made me nauseous and it took SEVERAL hours before it started to work.
I am sorry you went through this. Yes, the pills were taken off the market years ago and from what my gastro doctor told me it was due to kidney failure not liver failure. The stuff really worked though. I refused to use go lightly, even before my gastric bypass, that stuff is really hard on your GI tract. When I was post op, I used Movi Prep but I do have to say it didn't work so great on me _ I thought I was cleared out after one drink, so I didn't finish the second one andthat was my first mistake. Make sure you drink it all even if you think you are emptied out.
I would recommend going to a gastroenterologist - they do them all day long and have much experience in doing colonoscopies than the surgeons do. You will also have more flexibility with your schedule, you could probably do the preop over the weekend and have the test on Monday and not miss as much work. Good luck
