Ugh... liquids!!!

I thought I was completely set with a wide variety of protein shakes and soups for my full liquid phase of my post op diet.

I got sick of the soups really fast. Two of my protein flavors I couldn't stomach after surgery and the rest I got sick of as well. It's gotten really difficult to get my protein in because the thought of my "full liquids" just makes me nauseous. I wish this was an exaggeration.

My surgeons/nut's plan is 2-3 weeks of full liquids and then a transition to moist and mushies (which will be my diet thru week 12).

I feel bad because I've had a few bites of this and that from the moist and mushy phase here and there and the past 2 days I've actually had full moist and mushy meals. I know I'm not supposed to transition until I have the go-ahead, but I need to eat something and I can't stomach the liquids anymore! I'll be 2 weeks out as of tomorrow, but my follow up isn't until next Monday.

I'm not worried about damaging my pouch or anything. I'm following the rules (small bites, and chew the crap out of everything) and so far nothing's HURT me after I've eaten it.

Should I just go ahead and fully transition to moist and mushy phase or continue to try (and fail) to choke down my liquids? I'm going to go weigh in tomorrow and see if I can maybe talk to someone at my surgeon's office about this, but what are your opinions?

I think you should stick to your doc's plan, or at least talk to your doc before you decide not to stick to it.  You should find out why he recommends three weeks of full liquids and what the risks are, if any, of starting mushy foods sooner than advised.  Just because you haven't had pain after eating something so far does not mean it's good for you to eat it or that there is no risk involved.

On the other hand, it sounds like you've already decided to advance your diet without your doc's input, if you've eaten full mushy meals today.  So I'm guessing what you are really looking for here is for people to tell you that it's OK that you've decided not to follow your doc's plan.

It is OK for you to choose not to follow your doc's plan if that's the choice you want to make.  It's your choice.  I just think you should take the time to get the information you  need first to make an informed decision.  If you find out why your doc thinks it's best to wait another week and you disagree with him about that, then you should do what you think is best for you.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

I think you should try to follow your surgeon's advice. If you can't get
to the office, give them a call.  Change up your liquids and try other
soups. I would be remiss to give you any advice that isn't what your
surgeon told you. You have to decide to follow his instructions or not,
because if there are consequences, you alone will live with them. Did you
ask why he wants a full liquid diet for that long?  Does he expect that
something bad will happen if you don't follow it?  Does he allow for
you to advance sooner if your pouch tolerates mushies?  I think there
are a number of questions you might pursue to help you decide what
to do.  Good luck!

Well, you've only got a few more hours to go, so hang in there!

If you're really tired of your chosen soups, try getting some egg flower soup or something savory
like that just for a flavor change.  I like Wor Won Ton Soup, just because of all the different goodies
in the broth.

Are you going to be doing "Pureed"?  I'm not sure what the moist & mushy phase is supposed to
be, sorry.  When I went to what is called soft foods, it was after pureed foods immediately post-op.
I started with tuna, also had shrimp, scallops, refried beans w/grated cheese, ricotta cheese w/a dollop of marinara on top, stuff like that.  Just because it's soft doesn't mean it can't be tasty.

If you do eat something your little testy tummy isn't ready for, believe me it will let you know
forthwith, and you won't have to ask the doctor about it!  You'll be glad to get rid of it, I promise!

Good luck!

I'm not really looking for anyone to tell me I'm doing the right thing here. I'm not jumping the gun a whole lot here at all. I'm 2 weeks out tomorrow. I tried 3 different liquids today and each of them made me feel nauseous. So at the end of the day, I ate a turkey burger patty and 1/4c. cottage cheese. I needed some protein as I was feeling pretty weak.

Anyway, like I said, I will talk to someone at my surgeon's office tomorrow and make sure it's okay. I've done the minimum time on full liquids.

BTW, moist and mushy foods pretty much are your soft foods. My full liquids included strained purees. So fork tender meats, cottage cheese, ff, low sugar yogurt, all kinds of yummy things I'm looking forward to eating now!

It's good you're going to talk to your surgeon or his/her bariatric nurses tomorrow for advice!  There are things you just shouldn't be eating at this time.

Take that turkey patty.  My surgeon didn't let me start chicken and turkey until my 4th week (beef and ham are still no-nos as they are harder to digest).  The first soft meat I was allowed was fish.  I won't find out until my 3 month check-up in December what new foods I will be allowed to move on to.

Be careful not to push things too fast!
