I was 61 when I had my RNY, 62 now and did great. Everyone says I am the poster child, well, old lady, for WLS. I have had no complications and can tolerate any foods. Some Dr won't do RNY on anyone over 60 but my Drs said those are often their healthier folks. I've lost 100% of my excess weight and feel like I have my life back. I am also off all my previous meds for cholesteral and BP, no more sleep apnea and C-pac. My only wish is that I could have done it sooner.

Check out the Lightweight Board. We have several older folks, younger folks and all different surgeries.

I am 65 and just had my RNY Nov. 1st and this morning I feel great! My wife has been a great support system through this whole ordeal. I must say that I have been blessed all my life with good health, except for the 200 extra pounds that I was carrying, I new eventually it would catch up to me, so after lots of research and several failed diets, I decided on the RNY and so far I am still happy with my decision, although after only being in the hospital once in my 65 years it was difficult to put myself in for this. The operation went perfect, the people at Summa Bariactic Center in Akron, Ohio took great care of me, and after 13 days post op no pain at all. Now I must be honest with you the day of, and the first few days after, I did ask myself why did I do this? but I think that is normal and I am clear that I made the right decision!!
Best of luck to you and I hope this helps in your decision.

Hi, I too, was 62 when I had rny surgery on 4-14-11 and turned 63 in Aug.  I  decided rny surgery was best for me.  I had a sister 58 and my oldest daughter had same surgery and did so well with it that I didn't have any concern with it for me.  Wish I could have had it 20 years earlier , tho, but it wasn't as safe as it is now.   I have lost 109 pounds down from 277 and weighing 168 now and feel great!  I miss sometimes, how much I enjoyed food back then.  I tell everyone that I feel like I lost " my best friend" because food was an important part of my life and isn't now.  Don't worry , you will do great.  I too, couldn't find many people who was my age either having the surgery.

Hi I am Joyce, I think I may have clicked on the wrong part, I am new on the computer.  Anyway I am the one who was 62 when I had the rny surgery.  I think all doctors are different when it comes to vitamins.  I take a B12 which dissolves in my mouth (wish they all did) and a multivitamin which is so big that I cut in half.  I am guilty tho, because I have had problems swallowing these pills, that I haven't started taken the calcuim pills which I was suppose to started six weeks out.  I also have problems getting in my water and protein but you may not. I have lost 109 pounds in seven months and do not regret having the surgery.  I know from what my daughter says ( she had surgery 2 years ago lost 130 pounds) that it will get better and I will start to enjoy food again.  The best of luck with your surgery!

Hi Barbara
I didn't know that some of those come in chewable so I am going to look for them so I can start doing what I am suppose to do.  Have you been told about the hair loss?  Mine started at three months and stopped at six.  I knew what to expect because of my daughter.  I didn't worry about it because I knew it will grow back in time.  I did purchase a wig which I wear when I go out.  Just wanted you to know, if you didn't.  I hope you can get more protein and water in better than me when you have surgery.  Please let me know when you get a date set.  I saw a chart on Obesity help line about how much you should loose and at six months it said 45 to 60 pounds.  I exceeded that for sure.  I need to tho exercise more. I joined our YMCA near by and it helps.  My husband  and family have been so supportive for me.  Hope to talk to you again.
