SECOND GUESSING MY DECISION TO HAVE RNY ???

I have been second guessing wether or not I should have RNY or the sleeve, when I 1st started out on my journey I wanted the sleeve, but was unsure about it, because they did not have to many stastictics on it, and I thought that since the RNY has been around longer it would probaly be a safer option! When I went to my 1st appt with my surgeon he said that he could do the sleeve for me if I wanted, but I said no, and sense I still have not got a surgery date---- it is still not to late! So my question is to my RNY veterans why do you think RNY is the better option? Please I need help!

If your insurance will pay for it and your surgeon will do it then the sleeve may be a good option.  The only downside to me is the lack of long term statistics but at about 5 years out it seems to be about the same as the RNY.  The two biggest differences between the sleeve and the RNY are the malabsorption of the RNY, which is temporary anyway, at least calorie wise, the vitamins are forever, and the RNY pouch seems to be smaller.  But with the RNY pouch there is a chance of stretching (of course the sleeve can stretch, too) and the stoma enlarging.  With the sleeve there is no stoma so that is one less worry, not to mention you wouldn't have to worry about dumping or reactive hypoglycemia.  Some people want to dump for accountability, though.
It really is a personal decision but you can look at all the pros and cons, maybe head over to the VSG forum and ask questions, and decide what you can live with.

Donna,
I am having RNY on Tuesday, the 22nd.  I too went back and forth between the sleeve and RNY.  I really had to take a hard look at myself and my eating habits.  I am a totally sugar addict.  Sit a cake and a big piece of steak in front of me, I would devour the cake in no time and not even look at the steak.  I know not all people who have RNY dump, but I think just he possibility of it happening will be enough to keep me straight.  I had a bowel obstruction once that was so completely painful, and they linked it to the popcorn I had eaten that caused the obstruction.  Whether that is the true reason or not, I have not even touched popcorn since for the fear of it happening again - and I LOVE popcorn.  I was in denial for a very long time when I was preparing for the surgery about my eating habits.  I too wanted to sleeve because it is an easier recovery, etc., but also the sleeve hasn't been around long enough for me to feel comfortable with the statistics.  The band was supposed to be THE thing when it came out, and my surgeon says he is now removing 30 percent of the bands he put in because of problems.  So I am sticking with the tried and true method.  I hope this helps in your decision making.  Good luck to you!  I'm on my way to a much thinner and healther life!

Thanks and I am not to much of a sweet eater, but I am a meat and carb freak! I love subs, sadwiches, fried chicken, chineese food burgers, and fast food is a bad habit! So I am just wondering since the SLEEVE takes out the part of your stomach that controls your hunger that this might be a better option, but Feeling resticted to eat certain things, with the RNY could be what I need too! Oh well thanks and it did help a little!

Hey there.   I had the sleeve done in may 07 and i lost about 25 lbs.   These past 2 yrs i have gained all that back plus 30.   I went to see a new dr to see about a revision and to find out why i had gained weight wtth the sleeve.    The new dr did a endoscopy and found that my stomach was large.   I am assuming the first dr did not remove but approx 20 % of my stomach for the sleeve so now i can eat pretty much anything i want to.     This time I am going with the RnY because i just think its more effective.

Thanks Ding E Girl this is one of the things that scared me about the sleeve---the fear of gaining back the weight! I have a co worker who got Rny 12yrs ago, and she only gained back 20lbs, and is doing weigh****chers for the unwanted 20lbs.! She says do the RNY don't do nothing else! lol

Hey there my GBMC buddy I thank you for your honest opinion, and this does help alot, and this was one of the things I was worried about with having the sleeve-----gaining weight back! So I think I should just stick with the RNY! Thanks for your honesty my friend!
