I posted a photo of the bag of this protein as I unpacked it from the box today onto my Facebook account. It seems the folks are intensely sucked IN by the cookie graphic on the bag.
- "I WANT A COOKIE."
- "You didn't wait on the PB cookies though, did you? THOSE are the ones I wanna know about.
- "I WANT A COOKIE."
- "You didn't wait on the PB cookies though, did you? THOSE are the ones I wanna know about.
- Mr. MM came home, grabbed the bag and asked me, "When are you going to make THESE COOKIES?!"
I guess it "works." In a sales context, my peers WANT COOKIES.
My pouched-peers WANT COOKIES.
My highly non-sugar ingesting peers want WANT COOKIES. WHERE ARE THE FREAKING COOKIES?
But it got me to thinking -- do other protein powders have photos or images of the "flavor" they imitate? Particularly the snack-flavor based proteins: Chocolates, Vanillas, Bananas, "Creams"... do they show you a big dessert?
There's a line of "Dessert" protein - but they don't use any graphics at all, just very food-y names like "Fresh Cinnamon Roll." The company does not place a big honking cinnamon roll on the package, because, well, THERE IS NOT A CINNAMON ROLL IN THERE. There is not a peanut butter cookie in this bag of protein. I am not pleased. I was led to believe there might have been. ;)
There are other protein powders that do show graphics of fake snacks and desserts on the labels like this one from Syntrax Sweets, in a Vanilla Bean Torte, that shows a sugar-wafer cookie graphic. Also, in the Syntrax Sweets Line, Chocolate Truffle, with fake chocolate truffle graphics.
But, mostly, no, on most Bariatric-friendly products, you find no sugar-laced food porn.
Someone said - but - I don't expect to find a glass of milk inside a bottle of chocolate syrup! Yes, but on the bottle you see the words "SERVING SUGGESTION," also.
The stats are pretty super. It's whey protein isolate - which is a super protein. It's a random caloric number, 1 gram of fat, and 1 carb for 25 protein grams. That's kick ass. This is not a meal replacement, there are hardly any vitamins in there.Uh. Where's my cookie?!
After fighting with the bag to get it open, finally resorting to violence, I got it open and found this:
Looks eerily similar to Dyson Zorb Carpet Maintenance Powder BUT! It smells of GRANDMA'S HOUSE.
The powder gave off a vague peanut-buttery odor, mixed with vanilla, not very strong, which works for me as I am not really a big FAN of The Peanut Butter. I am a PEANUT fan. But not peanut BUTTER, if that makes sense. However, I love me some Peanut Butter COOKIE.
As directed, I added one scoop of the protein to four ounces (I lied, more like 5-6 ounces) of water and stirred. In a wine glass, because I'm fancy.
And? Stirred. And? Stirred. And? Yes. Stirred. I wanted to make it perfectly clear that I was doing this as directed, because obviously it was not working very well. I stirred well beyond the normal limits of normal human stirring for a protein product. I wanted it to be plain and clear that I am not bull****ting you.
The powder went from a moist-looking granule to a gooey mess in water. Big glops of peanut butter separated from the protein altogether. My son came up and said, "CARAMEL!"
I gave up and had my son dump it in the blender, and we liquified the caramel-ish-goopy-mess. After it was blended, it made a very frothy shake, but very very THIN drink.

It immediately started separating, with peanut specks to the bottom, and all foam on top.
Taste? Have you had powdered peanut butter? It tastes like watered down powdered peanut butter, with added diluted cheap vanilla protein. Though, it is not in least bit inexpensive, it is 100% Whey Protein Isolate.
It has a "unique" texture. And, those last few sips? SHIIIIIVER. Gritty.
Now, honestly, I was one of the first fans of powdered peanut butter, and I made videos about "adding it to protein shakes!" calling it a "proteingasm." (It can be THAT good.)
But this ain't be tastin' like that. It could. It doesn't. Sorry.
It also has a very distinct protein mouth feel, sticky lip after problem.
Here's another review. And another view: "
Never depend on others reviews that can be very misleading or biased. Your taste can be different from the lady across the streets. The places that give samples seem to do well." Uh, wow.
And -
"Folks, I typically LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, the Inspire Brand protein powders - especially the Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge and the Ice Cream Sandwich. I have lived off of two of these shakes a day for the past year. I received a new shipment last week when these products became available again, and there is a little bit of a difference in the taste. They are still good, but definitely not as good (in my opinion). The Ice Cream Sandwich tastes a little chalkier, while the PB Fudge doesn't have as much PB flavor. Why is the taste different? I'm not asking for a refund or anything (I still like them), but will the "OLD" version of these be coming back? I was devastated that the taste is a little off - I just recommended these again at another support group meeting last week. Please help!"
Maybe it's the new formulations -- perhaps I might have enjoyed the OLD ONES better?
To be fair, because I am going to get hate on this post: this product has a great nutritional profile. If you like it, drink it. It's the right kind of protein, and if it works for you, in mixed in small amounts, it could be the answer to dealing with "OMG, I can't get any protein in!" It's meant to be mixed in very small batches, and for new post ops, that's a super idea. (Again, another thing I wish I would have had 7 years ago? Small dose protein.)
For this product, I would have to doctor it up, which is not the point of it. It's meant to be great on it's own. Then again, I doctor up MOST protein powders. (True. There are a few I don't have to, but I'm not telling.)
I suggest -
- 1 scoop Inspire Peanut Butter Cookie
- 2 ounces water
- 2 ounces Light Vanilla Soy Milk, Almond Milk might be AWESOME in this!
- Crushed ice
- 2 Truvia/Splenda Packets or 1 serving sugar-free flavoring of your choice (Chocolate, Vanilla?)
- 1 TBSP powdered peanut butter
Blend all.
OR - Make COOKIES? I know that's what Mr. MM is thinking.
- Product - Bariatric Eating Inspire Protein Peanut Butter Cookie
- Via - Bariatric Eating
- Price - $24.99 for 14 scoops, $1.78 each
- Pros - There are cookies on the bag. Whey protein isolate, 25 grams of protein in a single! scoop! Smells like your grandma!
- Cons - There are cookies on the bag. Bag is tiny. Powder does not mix in the appropriate amount of water with a spoon. AT. ALL. Gritty texture. Sticky protein mouth feel. Diluted taste in a single serving as is.
- Rating - MM is torn.
It was very gritty, didn't mix well at all, and very, very thin. It also left my mouth super dry, like the day I had my RNY and wasn't allowed to drink anything. That dry.
I also tried another one of their proteins but I can't remember - something cinnamon or a latte or something like that. It was OK but not worth the cost, I would much rather have my CLICK for the same price (actually less).
