I don't think I'm losing

I know everyone says they feel they will be the one that the RNY fails for but - - - I really think I could be the one.

I am 2 weeks tomorrow and I have not lost a single pound this week.  In fact I may be up a little.   I started my journey in June at my heaviest 313lbs and had to do 3 months supervised.  According to the Dr I lost 22lbs during that time so I was at 291.  I lost a couple more pounds before my surgery according to my scales I was at 285 the morning of surgery.  Today I am at 275 but I have been there for the last week.

It just seems like I don't know if I am hungry or full.  I am still on the liquid thing.  I am only getting around 700 calories a day but I am making sure I get at least 60 grams of protein daily.  I am walking for my exercise.  I should probably be walking more but It's been cold and rainy outside so I am going to the mall or store and walk there.

I have not had any throwing up.  I don't know if I am full or not.  I eat one of those Soup at Hand can's of tomato soup and while I am not hungry, I sure don't feel full.  Is my pouch too big? I see other people say they eat 3 bites and are stuffed.  What if I don't experience that?  I almost think I would feel better if I did throw up so I would know my limitations.

Am I expecting too much to soon?

You have lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks, that is great.  You probably gained some weight in the hospital because for the fluids they gave you so you have lost that also.

Walking is good, do what you can.

The reason you don't know if you are full or not is because nerves were cut during the surgery and you  can't tell.  Eat/drink according to your plan, measure your intake because your can't tell and need to be sure you are getting the right amounts.  Most of those prepared soups are very high in sodium and that will make you retain fluid and therefore weigh more.  Water weight, not fat but the scale will show it.  I never threw up.  When folks talk about eating 3 bites and being full, they are talking dense protein, most likely, not liquids.  Liguids just pass through and you won't feel "full" like you will when you start soft food and dense foods.

You are doing fine.  Keep reading and learning about the journey, following your plan and you will be fine.

theres a reason why they tell you to measure your food,, you will not feel full and you will most likely not feel hungry due to the nerves of your stomach had being cut,,if you started out at 285 and are now 275 you have lost 10 lbs already, alot of that is water gain weight from your iv,,it's just been two weeks,,, you can't measure yourself against what some one else says they do,, there are folks that can eat alot and those that can't take but 3 bites,,

you are at the healing stage of your journey just follow your doc's plan for you and you will do great,,next comes the trial and error stage that is when you learn what you can tolerate and what you can't,,just takes a little patience, you will be fine hun. honest

Follow your plan - you will lose.

try to find a soup that has some protein in it.  Any milk based one will do.

Relax Snancypants

I felt the same way when I came home 4wks ago. Except, I actually did feel hungry but did not recognize a full sensation. From the time I came home I was able to eat/drink with no problem. I was sucking down soup like nobody's business. While the other ppl in my class were struggling to drink water. I can't explain why because everyone is different. I also have not felt nauseas or vomited from eating (I don't want to).

You've loss 10 pounds in 2wks so of course your not eating too much. I am 4wks post op today and I'm down 20 pounds. I wi**** was 35 but it's not, oh well!

I think maybe you are expecting a little too much too soon.

Thanks all.  I know I am a chronic worry person.  I just want, so badly, for this to be successful.  I am going thru all my post op stuff and I don't see anything about measuring yet but I didn't even think about the fluids going right through me.  I figured I was just stretching my pouch out with all this dang liquid.

You all are such a good group to help others.  I am so grateful I found this place.

  Big hug to you all.

Want to know why you don't feel full?  When you had surgery, they cut the nerves that signal your brain when your tummy is full.  It can take weeks or months for that to heal.  That's why it's so important to measure your food for now.

You lost a bunch of weight in a short period of time, even though some of that was pre op.  So now your body is pausing to adjust.  It's normal.  Supposed to happen.  It the numbers on the scale stress you out, stay off the scale.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

I didn't lose any weight from week two to week four!  The "dreaded" stall that occurs right after surgery.  Your body is catching up with the surgery and the new eating pattern.

I had no feelings of being "stuffed" either for the longest time.  I had no trouble getting water or the protein drinks down, and I wanted to start eating regular food right away.  I couldn't believe how much I wanted to eat.  Everything smelled delicious.  Luckily I kept to my portion sizes and correct kinds of foods.  But I was SO worried that the surgery didn't do anything to me and I'd be as hungry as I always was.

But it changes.  Just be patient.  All of that at the beginning was head hunger.  I no longer search for food to eat and I actually get full after 4-6 ounces and don't want to eat anymore.  This is the biggest difference between now and early out and when I had my lapband.  I DON'T WANT ANYMORE.  It's amazing!

Good luck, and please be patient!
