One thing is the availability of the surgeon and support around you. Too many think this is a quick fix for one. Some dont understand what they are getting themselves into from being misinformed and need to do some research atleast. I know for a fact that I would be in trouble if i didnt have both TT and OH forums. You can only read so much information, but you need to hear and read some experiences as well. Be it good or bad. Thats a huge reason both Ms. Kelly and Ms. Tazz are very known on these boards because of experience. I'm grateful that I am toung enough to be able to have WLS at the age of 26. All my weight gain was because of an undiagnosed hormone issue. My weight just kept escalating at near 5lbs a week. I will finally get to set a date early next month. My family and partner have been very supportive of my decision because they want me healthy and happy. For some I can agree that they are not mentally ready, and I think thats why they have complications/failure. Some complications just happen sadly and its unfortunate.

When I mentioned having the RNY done about 6 months ago to my mother, she flipped. All she could think about was how dangerous it was and how people can die from it. Clearly, she was thinking about the "old days" of bariatric surgery....stomach stapling....etc, that were in fact not the safest. I tried casually bringing it up a few more times and even tried telling her about how far WLS has come over the years and she wouldn't hear it. So I just basically didn't tell her, and she STILL doesnt know I had it done. Other than that, nobody else tried to talk me out of it. I have huge support in my friends that I have chosen to tell, but it kind of hurts not having that "mom support." But she just wouldn't understand. I'm really surprised at the nurses who told you it was not safe! Medical professionals, more than anyone, should know how safe it is nowadays. My primary doctor even told me at my last visit that 30 years ago, he would have told someone "No way! It's too risky...try and lose the weight on your own." Now he's just all for it. I had mine almost 3 weeks ago, and it has NOT made me sicker. I feel so much better just from the 30 pounds I've lost...I'm excited to see what losing 50...60...100 pounds feels like. It will save your life. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Good luck!

My mom is also trying to talk me out of it. I respect her imput,  but she forgets that this is MY choice, not hers. I have the support of everyone else around me, but her. I have been telling her for months that it is coming and keeping her updated on my appointments,,,,,,I think it goes in one ear and out the other when the word "surgery" is mentioned. I am waiting for insurence to approve right now! (here is to hope that it is soon). She is very againt it. She wants me to do Slim-Gentics like she is doing. She has paid for WW even. She is to the point that her new reason fo rme not doing it is SHE will not be able to get the time off of work to come and stay with me, so I must wait. It is very fusterating!!!!! I thought about not telling her when I do have it, but I would have too much guilt!

I have had people who say negative things about it, and they usually will share an experience that they have seen or heard from somebody they know who has had WLS, but when I hear the negative experiences that they are talkng about it is usually  because the people who had some complications, are not doing what they are suppose to do like; not eating right, taking there vitamins, or did not exercise properly. I am truly blessed, because my husband, mom, extended family members, close friends, and my CO workers are truly happy, and excited for me.  If I had alot of money and was really rich, I would have probaly paid for this surgery out of my pocket so I could hurry up the process and have it really fast! But since I I live a very normal blessed life, I have to depend on my insurance to pay for it, and I will tell you , yes it was hard and complicated, but I am happy that it took me 9 mos to have this surgery, because during these 9mos, I have been prepared mentally, and physically for this surgery! I also was really blessed to have had a starting BMI of 46, and had no major health issues, but I knew that if I kept gaining and going in the direction I was headed I would eventually have some of those issues. Alot of my issues were personal, like; not being able to fit in seats at events, and scared the chair won't hold me, sweating, out of breath just from walking up and down steps, feeling to big when I go in to places, not being able to wear certain clothes, being able to do more physical activities with family and friends, and the list goes on and on! So I am so thankful that I have researched RNY, have been educated on my WLS options, have been taught how to change my eating habits, have been educated on Vitamins, and the need for them, and mostly, have learned how to mentally discipline  myself with food. So when I first tell somebody that I am having WLS, they hear the certainty in my voice and if they try to say something negative, I am so educated on WLS that I usually can rule out there negative comments, with what could  have probaly went wrong! I tell everybody about my decision to have WLS, so I can help somebody who would like to have WLS there self one day! SO BE SURE FOR YOUR SELF, AND MOSTLY GET EDUCATED ON WLS IT HELPS!
