How soon is TOO soon?

I will be 6 weeks post-op on Tuesday and I'm dying to get back into the gym! How soon is too soon? I don't see my surgeon for another 6 weeks, but it doesn't seem right to wait until 3 months out to get back into the gym.

When did you resume/start a heavier exercise program than just walking?

I was cleared for all exercise at 2 weeks post op. My Dr just said, if something hurts, then stop. I have been doing the eliptical, treadmill, and outside walking since week 3, then added weights around week 6. Was your surgery open or lap? that might make a difference!

Gosh, as soon as my surgeon cleared me (around 2 weeks Post-Op) I was back to weight lifting! :)
I did wait and NOT do the heavy 200 lb squats or 300 lb Leg Presses until around 6 weeks, by 8 weeks I was back to my pre-op Bodybuilding routine.

Check with your surgeon, but you should be fine if you had no hernias or complications or "open" surgery.

Warmly,
Jackie

No hernias or complications here and I had laparoscopic RNY. Thank you for your responses. I think I will go ahead and get back to the gym and just stick to the mantra "if it hurts, don't do it." :)

I'm a bit suprised that you have to wait that long for a follow up.  I had one, like the others, at 2 wks out.  I was cleared to workout at the time.  He said it was partly because I was a lightweight.  If I were you, I would give the surgeon's office a call asking for clearance to workout and what their guidelines for you would be.  The phone call is free...

Hope you get the go ahead,
Paula

The physical therapist at my clinic let me go back after 4 weeks and it felt sooooooo good to get back in there!

At 2 weeks, I could use the pool and at 4 weeks start using the weights...  Good luck!  Don't push if you're body hurts though.

Sorry for the confusion. I guess I should have said that my NEXT appointment with my surgeon is in 6 weeks. I did have a 2 week follow up with him, but exercise wasn't discussed and I forgot to ask about it.

So yeah, I did have a 2 week follow up, but my next isn't until 12 weeks. I will give them a call on Monday and see what they have to say.

We can't start back at the gym until 6 weeks out! Its been killing me to get back into it. I hit 5 weeks on friday and plan on trying out some of my classes this week. I figured that I will be 6 weeks This week so that should count=)
