items needed before and after RNY
Find out from your doc about your pre op and post op diet and get whatever you need for those. After surgery, you'll need protein drinks, vitamins, Tylenol, maybe Gas X. I also found small plastic containers to be helpful because I had so many leftovers in the early days.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
When is your surgery?
You may want to start trying out protein drinks, just keep in mind that our tastes change after surgery and what you like now you may not like after surgery. Also, it really helps to go into surgery with a lot of protein. It really helps the healing. I can't really think of too many other things that you need before surgery.
For after surgery of course the protein drinks, sugar free drinks like Crystal Light or the store brand, Greek yogurt, I used 0% plain and added my flavors, sugar free Jello and puddings, I used pudding cups when I didn't feel up to making them, decaf coffee and herbal teas if you like those things, sugar substitute if you like that, sugar free syrups, cream soups (I loved cream of chicken cup of soup), cottage cheese, maybe some eggs or egg substitute (but keep in mind that a lot of new post ops don't tolerate eggs too well, your supply of vitamins and calcium that your surgeon recommends (as long as it isn't Flintsone vitamins and calcium carbonate). Those are the things that I can think of offhand that got me through the first few weeks. You may want to try different kinds of milk like almond milk or soy milk in case you can't tolerate lactose after surgery. A good blender (I loved the Hamilton Beach personal blender I found at Walmart for $15) and a blender bottle are good to have on hand for your shakes. Also sugar free popcicles and fudgecicles, some broth or bullion.
