i finally got one of my drs to tell me my Vitamin b-12 was low and vit D....it only took me the 3rd dr to get that fact out.. hah a
my PCM said i was fine on every thing...my surgeons office said i was fine on everything except my iron..and  i needed to take my multi vitamin more often and to get my iron in....but i was getting so constipated with iron....so i will be honest i was not taking it like i should...

had my blood work faxed to my Chiropractor and he went over them with a fine tooth comb today with me and said yes my items above were low and i told him what i was doing since i had gotten the labs drawn, he said that was a good start, i need to finish what i have bought and then we will work on some other things...i may be getting some vitamins and minerals from him rather than the building blocks i am taking now...that is what my surgeons office suggested and i have taken them since i had 6 months free...i have ordered one additional set, and about ready to get another one, but my chiro is looking into some things for me...
my chiro is very much into nutrition and natural and homepathic remedies and supplies, not just medicines and such...so i am glad i had my results faxed to him...

so anyhow just wanted to share with you, thanks Kelly for alerting me to my low levels even tho my other 2 drs did not....but third times a charm.. ha ha
have a great day

My doctor told me my iron was low but didn't tell me my B12 was sky high.  I wonder why the dr's do that.   Could it be that they are not educated.
Does anyone know if high numbers in B12 will hurt you in the long run.

Good Luck grmadeb01

What is sky high? A level of 1000 is optimum - 2000 is high and quite frankly a waste of money on supplements but probably not dangerous although most people would not keep supplementing past this because they don't need to ...

Not all RNY'ers need to supplement B12 to the same levels, if at all - some still have adequate intrinsic factor to metabolize B12 - that's why we get our labs done, because we are all very different in our absorption abilities - one size really does not fit all!!!!

Probably not.  But how high was it?

I'm glad your chiropractor seems on top of stuff.  Next time you get labs done, just ask for a copy of the results.  Then you can see for yourself what's low.

If your chiro suggests vitamins for you, you might want to make sure he is familiar with the ASMBS guidelines for RNY patients, just because he may know a lot about "normal" nutrition but our needs are a bit different and if he doesn't have many RNY patients he may not be up to date on that stuff.

Are you taking your iron now?  What kind are you taking?  Carbonyl usually doesn't cause constipation.

Just be very careful please.... a chiropractor is not an MD or DO, does not go to medical school, and is not required to undergo any advanced training in vitamin or mineral supplementation.

I'm not saying he's wrong, in fact he may very well be right.... just beware....

Unlike the medical advice you get on here, you mean? I see people that don't have ANY medical training at all giving advice on vitamins here every day - and people suck it up!

You are absolutely right!!!

We have a duty to be informed and our own advocates - to find out for OURSELVES what we need, to learn how to interpret our own lab results and what we need to do to remain in optimum health. Blindly taking advice from MDs, Chiropracters or old ladies on the internet as gospel is really not the best idea.

We need to be active participants in our health decisions and not blindly abdicate that to anyone!

You're correct... but medical docs are not required to undergo any advanced training in vitamin or mineral supplementation at all either.  In fact, depending on what medical school they go to, some receive NO training in nutrition at all.  Others get one class on the basics and that's it.  So we should also be very careful with what our doc's tell us about vitamins.

And I will add... be careful with what people on the internet tell you, too.  Including me.  Ask where information is coming from and research it yourself, if you want to be safe.

i have been taking the building blocks vitamins since surgery...it comes with a bottle of iron also...it says iron(as chelate) 30 mg....i got some hemevite iron from the chiro today it says vitamin C 200mg, iron (as ferrous fumarate) 6 mg, yes it is a lower dose so that i can try and take it every day without getting constipated..i can increase it as time goes on, or back it back down as i need to... it also says liver 600 mg, betaine HCI 100mg, im gonna give it try to work on my iron...i got VIT D from vita lady, I'm taking 20,000 a day...i got B-12 from wal mart sublinguals...and yes i did get a copy of my lab reports i do each time i get them, have a whole folder full...so i was going thru them with him with a fine tooth comb today..it was just nice to know that i finally got a dr to agree that my levels were low...when i knew they were low thanks to kelly before hand...just bothers me that my PCM and my RNY surgeon did not, the surgeon only mentioned i was low on the iron and i needed to take the iron and take more of my multi...the PCM said "EVERYTHING IS IN THE NORMAL RANGES, YOU ARE FINE WITH EVERYTHING"...
i plan to have my labs drawn every 6 months, or do we need to have them drawn more often?
thanks everyone
have a great day
