Dates...the food, not the people

I am 25 months post op.  I loved dates pre op.  I buy my dates from Whole Foods...so, I guess they're fresh.  Anyway, every time I eat them - as few as 2 or as many as 4 I get really sick to my stomach.  I just recently started eating them again.  I ate 4 a few minutes ago and feel really ill.  Is it  because they are gooey and clog up?  I am not a dumper, so I don't think it is the sugar.  Does anyone have this issue.  I can't figure this one out.

It may be the sugar or the fiber - seeds, or some other stuff that dates have.

You may dump on some items and not on others.

i.e. I can eat grapefruits with no problem, I dump on oranges, but not clementines.
Can't eat raw carrots. no matter how they are processed. Cooked - no problem.

Thank you....I wondered if it was the sugar but was not sure.

They make me feel icky too.  I decided it must be the sugar, but maybe the gooey-stickiness could have something to do with it as well.

That is interesting.  I decided today I can no longer eat them.  The sick feeling is immediate.  It is amazing that this far post op I found something that does not work.  Even though I may have to pass on the dates...I love my tool.

I love dates, but at only 5 1/2 weeks out I wouldn't dare try them now. I do dump big time!!!! Maybe in a couple years. BTW of the centers aren't a green juicy. They are dried. I have only had fresh once in Israel hand picked at harvest time. In Bahrain they were dried but soft when they beat the trees to knock and shake them down.

I have a relative who lived in Bahrain several years and now lives in Saudi Arabia.  Now dates from Israel picked at harvest time must have been a very treat treat...both for the cultural impact and culinary benefit.  Did you live there or work in the energy industry?

Dasie,

I love dates too.. They are gooey...and high in sugar.. I wonder if you ate raisins/prunes/figs/other dried fruits if the same thing would happen.. I'm betting on the sugar...

I cant eat too much of any dried fruits.. I especially love dried mango, cranberries, ginger, etc.

Sounds like your might dump on dates?

I'm wondering if I do.  I eat raisins, prunes but not too much figs.  I too love dried mango, and unfortunately can eat and eat it with no effects at all.  It only happens with dates.  I have never dumped, but that immediate sick to my stomach happens with dates without fail.  So, unfortunately, very unfortunately I guess I cannot eat them.  I may try eating one next time.  I'll eat them if I find I'm craving something sweet.  I didn't know we could dump this far out, 26 months, if we have never dumped before?

I'm one of those who will dump on some sugary things but not others, and on some days and not others, and didn't consider myself a dumper at first. I'm 32 months out. Some days I can eat a cupcake or cookie, no problem (though this is really bad and I am not encouraging this renegade behavior at all); other days raisins or that same cookie I ate the previous day will send me over the edge.

I often find that it relates to what I'm eating in combination with the sugary item. So I can eat a few raisins with a few nuts or a piece of cheese, but those raisins on their own would create blood sugar problems that make me feel sick. Or I can eat part of a sweet dinner roll after eating a protein-rich meal, but on an empty stomach, that same roll would cause problems.

I also love dates, but oh so sugary. I might treat them like raisins. Have you tried eating them with almonds or a similar nut for nutritional balance?

Having RNY was probably the best thing I've ever done for myself.
