What Caused Me to Dump?
I thought I had been doing pretty good. No symptoms of dumping for months. For a while there I was dumping all the time from too many healthy carbs and too much healthy fat, as well as sugar alcohol. It was hard because I have been trying to gain weight in a healthy way so I was increasing the carbs and fat and I would dump. Like I said, that hadn't happened for a while. I totally avoid sugar and refined carbs.
So tonight I had my protein drink which was hot raspberry cocoa. I have been having this drink for at least a week with no problems but for some reason tonight I dumped big time. I don't know why. I make it with unflavored whey isolate, sugar free hot cocoa mix, powdered cocoa, Splenda, milk and sugar free raspberry syrup. I can't see anything in there that would cause it.
I am sure it was dumping because I have done it before and it was exactly the same. I hate to think that I am going to go through that again.

Did you drink it quicker than normal? Or even closer in time to a previous meal? I deal with the same thing. I have been following your progress and was honestly hoping I would eventually quit being so sensitive because you seem to have. I dump at the drop of a dime and it seems like no rhyme or reason. I don't dump on an Atkins peanut butter bar but DO dump on the chocolate chip version with the same stats. I have almost given up of trying to predict it!
The funny thing is I almost forgot what it felt like to dump it had been so long. I was sitting here wishing for death and then I realized that is exactly what happens when I dump. I didn't expect it because there was nothing I had that should have made me dump and I have basically the same thing twice a day.
I may have drank it faster then I should have. Not too soon after a meal. I think it may have actually been 4 or 5 hours since I ate to tell you the truth. I am bad about that because I don't really get hungry and I still felt pretty full. In fact I almost forgot to have my protein drink and then I looked at the clock and realized I needed to get that in.
I sure hope I don't get sensitive again. I liked feeling almost like a normal person. Hoping it was just a fluke.

I bet it was how quick you drank it. I find that even with my morning protein latte or whatever version of hot protein coffee I whip up each day that if I drink it too quick, I first start to get unbearably hot, then the heart pounding starts, and then I feel so weak and jittery that I have to go lie down. It's SUCH a gross feeling... the nausea and such kills me each time.
Chalk it up to a one time thing unless you start to see it happen more often. I'd just slow down when drinking your protein...

Girlfriend, I am thinking the exact same thing. I was enjoying feeling normal and had also "forgotten" what it was like to REALLY dump. Like you, I also noticed that I was not eating and drinking well today before I decided to have my snack. I had very little protein and fluids for the day and it had been about 5 hours since I had eaten. I think this may be a reminder that we have to be mindful about not waiting too long to eat and that we will not be able to act like "normal" people without some risk...
About 30% of people with the RNY will dump. It is because we no longer have use of our pyloric valve, which regulates when food goes into our intestines. When we eat things like sugar it dumps into the intestines and fluids rush up the intestines to dilute the contents of the intestines. The symptoms are usually pain, nausea, diarrhea, rapid heart rate and sweating. For me I just feel like I want to die. That sounds dramatic but it is a horrible feeling. I can't function, I get really tired. I want to vomit but I can't. The only good thing is for me it rarely lasts more then 1/2 an hour, although the weakness and disorientation can linger for a while.
