VETS: BOUNCEBACK WEIGHT

I have been experiencing bounce back weight recently.  I am very cognizant of this and have been very watchful.  Nevertheless it is just coming on practical a pound every few days.  I have changed nothing.  If anything, I am more proactive than usual.  Today it was another pound.  Now I am concerned.  I know this happens to some, but I don't know what to expect.  It is now 8 pounds from my lowest and 4 pounds from what I have been weighing for about 1 year.  Everyone is different, but I don't know what to expect.  Does it taper after about 10 pounds, 10%?  Is there simply nothing that can be done since the malabsorption is lessening?  It is hugely concerning me this morning.  I took a deep breath with the first few pounds, but this is not a ever so many days/week event.  I even started drinking more protein shakes to make certain I'm getting my protein requirement.    I'm drinking water, and for the first time since surgery, I think the POO problem is solved.  I'm not eating problematic  carbs either.

There's no rhyme or reason IMO as to why the bouceback hits some and not others.  It happens and yes it becomes a concern.  I dropped to my lowest in 2005 initially then saw the numbers going up without any changes either.  Settled about 8 lbs higher for a while then became lax and gained up to above my goal weight.

For me, just getting back to logging and watching I was able to get below goal and maintain there.  Stress then hit and I lost too much weight.  I'm back up to a weight I feel comfortable with and need to refocus again on my choices and yes start logging again.  Logging my intake is very key to staying diligent I go in denial as to what I'm putting in my mouth when I don't log.

Keep logging and being aware....it's such a stressful time when you don't change things and yet the scale goes up even if you really might need to gain some weight.

Thank you so much Dana.  That was very helpful.  I think I am going to have to measure everything every time no matter what.  I don't measure my olive oil for my salads, and if I'm eating healthy I don't usually measure that portion - like green beans, etc...  But I have to do something.  My husband asked me if it is because I started drinking 2 shakes per day in order to make sure I get the protein in need.  They only have 110 per shake and are low carb, sugar, etc.

I hit my goal a couple times and immediately  landed 4 pound above it.  That is what I weighed for a little over a year.  Now since the first I am up another 4.  If anything I am eating much, much healthier.  Once again, thanks.

I am just a bit farther out than you...

I found that tiny changes (like the addition of protein) without changing others things will cause a gain.  If you added 2 shakes a day and did not take away anything, you are adding 220 cals/day.  I have grown fond of coffee since my surgery, but I like it with half and half...when I overdo that, the scale knows!

I also know that when I am not exercising, I have to make sure I cut back on my intake.  I know that some folks forget to take account of that.

Tracking everything for a few days is a great idea.

You are right.  I did not change anything when I added those drinks.  I also cut back on my cardio this year in order to spend time lifting.  I have to readjust now and alter what ever is causing this or learn to accept this readjustment.

I have not experienced what is called bounce-back weight and I believe it is because I adjusted my caloric intake (and exercise) when I saw a few pounds coming back to visit. It was over a year ago when I found myself about 3 or 4 pounds above the weight where I felt comfortable. For me, I know that it was because I was eating more that I should have. (Since then I have experienced an unexplained weight loss that I am working with health care professionals to try to figure out).

I hope that you find that comfortable weight, whether it is at your lowest or a few pounds above that. I never in my lifetime thought that I would be trying to gain weight  but I am.....

With not too much effort I have been maintaining.  If I jumped up a few pounds I could get it off.  When I did gain it was because I was off track and knew it.  This is different though.  I need to log everything.

I hope you find the reason for your continued weight loss, and  keep us posted.  I've heard it is hard to gain weight too after RNY when weight gain is necessary.

I often hear it quoted as a 10-15 or 10-20% of EWL coming back.

I heard that too, or something close to it, I think.  In our last pre op class I asked the coordinator this question.  She would not give me a statistic but said be prepared.

When I was in my losing phase, I got down to 132 pounds. My self-imposed goal weight has always been 140 (since I was in my 20's). I did not like being below that, so about 18 months out I ate more on purpose to get up to my goal. About the 2 year mark, which is about where you are, I gained above that and had to cut back on calories. Now at 3+ years out, it has gotten easier for me and I'm pretty much +/- 2 of my goal weight. I am a daily weigher. If I'm up 3 pounds, I make sure I track my food. Otherwise, I usually do not track. The scale is my guide.

You'll figure out what works for you. Hang in there!!
