VETS: BOUNCEBACK WEIGHT

I agree that daily weighing is very improtant.  That way you can catch early gain in a very manageable fashion.  I have a high weight that I watch for (125)....when I hit that I cut back on any carbs (inclduing fruit) for a few days and that take care of the issue.

I weigh every day too.  I think I took for granted that because the scale would fluctuate 3 pounds up one day then 3 back down the next, I just figured it was temporary.  But then the first few stuck, and I was kind of ok, barely.  But then there was a couple more and the going back down totally stopped, and the extra pounds stuck.  Today was my wake-up.  It was another pound.

Hey Dasie, I've been listening to Fat2Fitradio.com and resistance training is super important to increase your resting metabolic rate. So of course, cardio and walking is important, but it's also super important to increase your lean muscle mass - then you'll burn more calories while resting and as we get older we automatically lose muscle and since we all did a starvation diet just after WLS, we lost even more muscle mass.

Don't give up on the weight training - but you don't have to go to a gym to do it (or get a ride to the gym) you ca do situps, squats, etc....

Good luck.

My bounce came when I was perfectly compliant. It's part of the reason I loosened up a bit. Well...first I rebelled...and maintained the same weight. So it seems to me no matter what I do, I stay THIS weight so...I should eat right MOST of the time and if I have a treat it will not kill me.

Now back to you...your body may be trying to get to its set point. Set point is the concept that everyone is essentially "designed" to be a certain weight. My surgeon is a big believer in this and says I was not made to be super thin. After years of therapy and many exercises aimed at self acceptance I can say I agree.

Keep doing what you're doing. This is the time when that whole "lifestyle change, not diet" gets put to the test!

Hugs.

Thanks Nik.  I have to take a deep breath about this.  I was walking a lot.  My New Year's resolution was to do more resistence training and weight lifting which meant less cardio.  Family members drive me around, and I cannt monopolize their time.  Maybe I do better with more cardio and walking.  If this is a new set-point I'm going to have to do some self talking.

Anna,
I hardly believe that you are gaining weight every few days.. I would throw out that scale and get a new one.. maybe the battery is running low or something with the springs. I was recently upset about 4 weeks ago that I put on a couple of pounds according to my scale at home. When I went to the dr's office it showed that I was 10 pounds lighter? so the poor scale at home was reading "Lo" on the digital display.. I really at the time didnt think about it.. after some investigation, found out that that means battery was LOW.. and the scale was reading me much higher for some devilish reason.. changed the battery finally and discovered I was at my goal weigh still. Crisis resolved..
I know for myself, I sometimes get a bit lax with food measurement calculating calories too. For example yesterday, I just wanted toast, oatmeal etc. So thats what I ate.. Today, its back to protein shake and coffee for breakfast. My one friend at work who also had RNY, she is 4 yrs out. She measures everything and eats the same stuff everyday.. I dont think I could live that way.. Its too restrictive and I would rebel anyway. I didnt sign up for that..
Good Luck on your continued journey..
Michelle

As much as I wi**** were not true, it is.  I almost did not want to post about it because I believe too strongly in the power of our words.  I even asked my husband if he adjusted the scale and if his weight has changed.  He had a cardiac issue this year and has to monitor his weight.  He said he is staying the same.  This is a medical grade scale used for a family member while they were in hospice.  It does not have batteries and is calibrated to our doctor's.  That is why I am really concerned.  I did cut back on my cardio in order to lift more weights.  But there is no way I put that much muscle mass on in a few weeks to account for the additional 4 pounds on top of the first 4.  Maybe it is the added shakes and less cardio.  One thing for sure, I hope it stops.  Like Nik said I wonder if my body is finding a new set-point, which means I have to adjust my thinking.  I hope not.

I don't think your body is getting a new set-point. Have you tracked your food to see how much you're actuaally eating? When I had my gain at the two year mark, at first I did not think I was doing anything differently. Then I had to admit to myself that I was eating more and I stopped doing that.

For me, it has gotten easier at 3 years out than it was at 2 years out.  I am happy to report that the 2 pounds I gained during the holidays are officially gone as of today.

I don't think it is a new set point either.  I added 2 protein shakes that added 220 extra calories.  I also cut back on my cardio.  I don't think that is working either.  I  have taken for granted how easy this has been.  I am going to have to count every morsel and make sure I am not eating more than I realize.

I got to my lowest weight in 18-20 months and then, due to adopting some bad habits again, I regained about 25 lbs.   I had a come to Jesus talk with myself, and got back on plan.  I'm now down 5 lbs. beyond what was previous low point, and hope to continue for another 40 or so.

I'm nearly 3 year out now, and I can always tie regain to problem behaviors.
