So I started this journey April 1st of last year.  Did everything that was asked, and only took six days for insurance approval.  But then the bad news.  Due to my type of insurance there was a ten month waiting list for surgery.  So i was given a date of March 12th 2012 and I've been waiting...and waiting.

Then I tore the cartilage in my knee.  In October I had arthroscopic surgery and then developed a blood clot behind my knee. I have been on warfarin ever since and when I saw my pcp she told me I have to postpone/cancel my surgery. i was devastated.. .I did get her to reconsider, but she said my clot must be gone.

Well i just recenly found out through ultrasound that its completely gone. I am very lucky that it went away so fast.  So I see my pcp on Feb 9th to go off warfarin and I see my surgeon on Feb 15th to start my pre op appointments.  This has been a long wait and I'm almost there.  i am only concerned because of the clot. Will it happen again? Has anyone else had clotting problems prior to surgery or been on warfarin before surgery.  I called the surgeons office and they said they would discuss it at my appointment, but I'm a little worried.... any thoughts??

Talk this over with your surgeon. It's pretty standard for most of us to get a lovenox shot the morning of surgery, you just may need to keep taking it for a while post op. The clot is currently gone, so no immediate effects. This does increase your risk of deep vein thrombosis (clot) in your legs, or even a PE (pulmonary embolis=big clot in large vessel) Forewarned staff can deal with your history. It should not cause your surgery to be cancelled. Good luck!!

I was on coumadin for almost 2 years because my lungs were filled with blood clots. I've been off that for about 6 months now and my surgeon says he will put filters in my groin to prevent any blood clots from going through from my legs. Perhaps your surgeon would do the same thing if he thinks it will be a problem??
