Blood work
So I finally got my 3 month post op blood work results. Everything looks good except my Vitamin C is low as well as my Vitamin D. The doctor's office said they are sending me a prescription for the vitamin D that I have to take 10,000mg or mcg once a week for 2 months then 500 everyday after that. Anyone familiar with what time of Vitamin D this is and if this indicates me being really low in it?
Yeah, prescription D is D2 and you need D3. Also, 10,000 IU a week is not nearly enough. I know very few post ops that can maintain a good D level on less than 10,000 IU PER DAY.
How low is your D?
As far as vitamin C, you can get that over the counter. Take it with your iron, it will help you absorb the iron.

I am not sure how low my D is but wouldn't the doctor's office know that the pharmacy will give D2? Or is it possible that D3 will be indicated and available? My sister got all her vitamins from the pharmacy and they actually made it in liquid form for her. As for iron, I don't take any and my doctor never recommended it. Is this something I should be taking?
The doctor's office may or may not know that the pharmacy will give you D2 and they may or may not know that you will absorb D3 much better. You'd have to ask them. Even if the doc writes the script for D3, though, the pharmacy will give you D2. There is no D3 by prescription and legally they are allowed to make that substitution.
The ASMBS says all RNY patients need iron. They recommend 54-63 mg for menstruating women and 36 mg for everyone else.
You can call your doc's office and ask how low your D is. That's the only way to know how much you need but I can promise you that 10,000 IU a week will not bring it up at all.

I take 2000 IU of Vit D daily already, plus the vit D that is in my calcium. So I take just over 19,000 IU per week already! Were you taking ANY vit D before getting your blood work checked.

wow, I never thought to get my vitamin C checked. IF you have none in your system, then you better get some but not sure on exact dosage for a deficiency. I will say that everyone needs iron, even postmenopausal woman and men. It is a very rare instance when someoen truely doesn't need iron and if you check there labs, they probably do.
You should go to vitalady.com and get some tender irons - they are 60mg of carbonyl iron with 400mg of vitamin C in them to aid in absorbtion. THis is a minimum dose - most need alot more. My NUT starts everyone on a minimum of 150mg.
You should ask your doctor for your iron, ferritin, iron sat%, hemoglobin, hemacrit levels. Also your B12 . IT would be best to get a copy of your labs and post them here and we can help you with what is good and what is bad = and make suggestions of what is lacking and the proper supplements to take.
Unfortunataly many surgeons and especially PCP's dont' know the proper vitamins and minerals that we need and can absorb. They also will say things are normal just because you are at the bottom of the level when infact you need to be either in the middle, high end or some actually need to high.
For vitamin D - if you were low, that means you were less than 30 - normal is 30-100 and ideally we want to be at atleast 60, but preferably 80-100.
WE all need to take Dry D3 -which is only available in large doses. You say she was going to give you a script for vitamin D - prescription D doesn't come in a strength of 10,000 plus it is D2 - it is 50,000 units of D2 which is the proper dose but the wrong type. You can get the 50,000 units of Dry D3 at vitalady.com by BioTech - you can take that once per week but even that is a low dose for a level lower than 30. When I was at 36, I took it 2 times per week and I went up to 90 in 2 months -stayed there for a few months and it dropped a bit so I increased to 3 times per week and stayed there for a fw years until I got too high and I am now back on 2 times per week.
Never cut your dose to 500mg a day - that will sink your level into the toilet. Once you take the 50,000 units 2 times per week, get rechecked in 2 months to make sure you level is good and then you can adjust from there - if good, you can stay to maintain.
