Just some general alcohol facts, not unique to WLS patients -

Alcohol is a diuretic. It dehydrates the body. That's what causes hangover headaches--the lack of cerebral fluid in the skull causes the brain to be less cushioned, and causes pain.

Alcohol is a blood thinner. If a person has ANY kind of partially healed or fresh wound, let alone internal incisions, it could cause those wounds to weep, leak, or weaken.

Alcohol impairs judgment. People tend to make poor choices when they are inebriated, including dietary decisions. The ability to know when to STOP drinking also lessens, and people can become susceptible to alcohol poisoning.

Consumption of alcohol inhibits the body's ability to absorb vital nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, particularly B vitamins.

Fat usually gets deposited in the liver after alcohol consumption, even short term. This can lead to fatty liver, jaundice, and inflammation of the liver and gallbladder.

Alcohol consumption raises blood pressure and increases the risk of stroke and heart attack.

There's also the fun trivia of why people get intoxicated in the first place. Being drunk isn't just a condition, it's a symptom. It's a symptom that alcohol (a toxin) is interfering in our brain's ability to get oxygen. It makes us loopy and disoriented in the same way carbon monoxide would. It's poisoning your body.

Now-- apply all that to someone who has just indergone major surgery, may already be dehydrated, has trouble absorbing vitamins and minerals, may be struggling with gall bladder, liver, or blood pressure issues due to obesity, and cannot digest alcohol properly, being therefore prone to over-indulging, just with two ****tails.

It doesn't add up to anything good.

ok...lets try again.  I don't want you to feel uncomfortable here..you upset me with your response to something that  had nothing to do with you and then the way you responded to Frances...

Lets leave it in the past.

While you are in your "honeymoon" phase of weight loss...up to the first year, but especially the first 6 months, you are burning fat at an unusally high rate.  A level that your body is not used to accomidating.  This puts extreme pressure, stress and strain on your liver and kidneys.  Adding alcholhol to the mix causes extra stress on your body.  Your metabolism is out of wack and  booze will additionally stress it. It will also cause dehyration.  We dehyrate and a high rate and need to very aware of the early warning signs.

It isn't advisable at all to even attempt it in the first months.  Please take its slow...you need to baby yourself now.  Concentrate on your protein, learing to eat new foods, making sure you are getting in your fluids.  You need to get in touch with what you can handle at this point...learn how your body reacts.

You will be pleasently suprised that later on down the road...vodka, rum, bourban..they all have 0 carbs...so Rum and diet cokes are in your future..just not now.
