My sister had ryn and is 2 yrs out and had done awesome! I'm now approved for sleeve .   Dr. Suggested  this over ryn for me. I have type 2 diabetes. My bmi is 35 . I have 60 to 70 to lose. Why did you choose ryn and was sleeve an option for you?

I had RNY because my BMI was 43, I had over 150 lbs to lose, I had high blood pressure, and I was pre-diabetic.  The sleeve was an option for me, but because I had so much weight to lose, I chose RNY.  If I hadn't been quite so over weight, I would have chosen the sleeve because I could then take Ibuprofen and other NSAIDS and wouldn't have had the malabsorption of nutrients the rest of my life.  I do not regret my RNY one moment but do wish I could take NSAIDS.

1) I wanted the intolerance to sugar and fat. Even if I'm not a dumper, I still want the initial fear of "Maybe I will be, so let's not test it."

2) I didn't like the idea of foreign materials in my body, with LapBand. Having to get fills and having a port under my skin all creeped me out and seemed really high maintenance.

3) I wanted to go under the knife once. Once. I've heard of SO many people getting Lapband revised to RnY, I figured I didn't want to end up doing the same thing.

4) Gastric sleeve doesn't provide malabsorption, so I chose RnY instead. Considering I "only" have about 120lbs to lose (only. Ha!) I could have probably gone with the sleeve, but I didn't like the higher risk of surgical complication.

5) There is the most long-term information about bypass, as opposed to other procedures. Bypass is the more established surgery for permanent weight loss, and so far, seems to be the one with the most information about longterm risks and results. It felt safer to me.

I will echo some of what Charlie said...I don't want a foreign plastic thing in me forever, and that was a big reason that I decided not to go with the Band (although when I first went in for my initial consultation I thought I was going for the Band). Bipass surgeries have been being performed since the '50's so it's tried and true. Also - and this is probably my number 1 reason - I need to not feel hunger all of the time. I am constantly hungry now (my RNY is scheduled for April 16th) and I believe that a big part of my problem is that I trick myself into thinking that I don't really eat that much, because if I did then how could I still be hungry. Yet, here I sit more than 100 pounds overweight and with a BMI of 41. I believe that sleeve was an option for me, but it was never really on my radar.

Sleeve wasn't an option for me. Tho even if it was I had so much to lose that I feel I need the malabsorption that RNY gives me.

Good luck

Met my first goal, met my second goal, met my surgeons goal. Now I have a new goal!

I wanted the Lap-band at first but one talk with my surgeon and he was honest and said I was way to big and had to much to lose to have the Lap-band. So I had RNY because it was my only option. I don't have a carb addiction but I do have a mini sugar addiction .  I haven't had a problem losing my sugar addiction and I can still have protein which I love.

Each case is very specific, and my doc and I agreed upon RNY as the best for me with my co-morbidities.  These included sleep apnea  and very significant issues with reflux.  I had 100lbs of excess weight with a starting BMI of 37.5

It was the right decision for me, but I have lost 105% of my excess weight, I'm still losing,  and am still working on getting my protein numbers up.  My concerns are not typical, but they do reflect the malabsorptive component of RNY.

I suggest that you have a good indepth talk with your doctor about why he suggests the sleeve vs RNY, and the pros and cons of each surgery for your specific case.

I actually chose the sleeve but the insurance chose the RNY for me. :)  My surgeon was very supportive of either choice.  Very anxious for my surgery date of 04-11-12...the wife and I just got home from protein, vitamin and supplement shopping.

My family doctor recommended it, I researched it and it seemed like a good fit. Also, the pain was very low for me and I am 19 days post op and I feel funny recovered. I "fingers crossed" wont have to have a surgery for reversal. From all my research I noticed that RNY was being called the Gold Standard of WLS.. It seemed like the right choice.
