What eating plans does everyone start...

I am just in the process of starting the WLS thing (one more month until I can make my first appointment- insurance changing- getting married ), so I was curious on what eating plans people start before surgery. I heard alot of people eat low carbs. I was wanting to check out the South Beach diet, or do I go for the extreem Atkins? I know I will meet with the NUT, but I wanted to get a little head start. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks-
Kris

I really didn't start following any specific diet plan right away.  After I began my 6 months of supervised diet/nutrition which were just monthly visits to the Nut I would make subtle changes to my diet based on our discussions.

So I begin to work on not drinking when I ate.  Eating my protein before anything else.  Tracking my carbs to get a handle on exactly how many I was eating (that was a eye opener!) daily.  Cutting back on sugars and any white flour I was getting.  Just small adjustments like that.

HTH.  Welcome and Good luck!

That is very helpful- Thanks!!. I find the no drinking with meals will be very hard for me. That is one thing I can start now. I usually eat and gulp very fast, so those are two things that would benefit me to learn to slow down.

Oh yea if you eat too fast you definitely want to start working on that.    And the gulping.  Your pouch will not take kindly to that for quite some time after surgery.  It likes things coming down slow, well chewed and with as  little air as possible.

I was worried about the not drinking with meals as well.  It turned out to be a bit easier than I thought it would.  But I am glad that I started working on that early out.  Once you have surgery and are eating 2 Tbsps of food for a meal it's easier to not drink, I think, if you have been able to do it with what was a normal meal for you pre-op.  That's one hurdle already out of the way.

My surgeons office put me on a 1700cal, low sugar, low carb diet.   I would ask your nut what plan they prefer for you.  Good luck!

2 months before surgery, I switched to 3 protein shakes a day followed by a sensible dinner. I lost 23.5 lbs.

You can start making small changes now. Stop drinking Soda, stop smoking, start walking, don't drink with meals, cut out bad carbs, etc.
