I believe that when you apply for life insurance, the medical questions are pertaining to the last 5 years.  (Dont quote me on that!!)

I think you are right to discard her opinions on the dying part (we know how rare it is), but the insurance thing is true. One of my BFF's is an insurance agent, and she told me to get it beforehand as no one will touch you for years later, unless they don't ask ANY medical questions.

Good Luck,

OMG this is the first time I've heard about the insurance thing. I wish somebody had told me sooner. I was so looking forward to getting a lower cost life insurance with my new lower weight. When I looked online last year to get insurance quotes when I entered my height & weight the website would say they didn't have an insurance product for me. So one of my goals for after weight loss was to qualify for one of those insurance policies you hear about on tv & radio advertisements, saying you could get $250,000 of term life insurance for $20 a month. I am grateful that I already have life insurance but was really looking forward to getting one of the kinds I didn't qualify for at previous weight.

She knows five people that died but can't remember who they were?  Um, I remember all the people I know that died (not from WLS, from other things, I mean).  If she can't remember who they were, how does she know there were five of them?

Ridiculous, people that are negative are ridiculous and you have to turn a deaf ear to them.  I heard that so many times before my surgery that it was annoying.  Usually these people are uneducated about the subject and most likely never knew anyone in particular that actually had the surgery.  I also asked them well who did you know that died and they could never answered.  So I decided that every time  someone will tell me negative things about the surgery I would say the following:   Well, I appreciate your concern but I have made my decision, being this big is unhealthy, unsafe and it makes me very unhappy, so if I have decided to change my life and if this surgery is going to help I will do it.  I know there are risks and I am willing to take them, I know that they will be people that won't support me or even understand my decision and that is ok, it is not for everyone".
Regarding the insurance, it is also difficult for people that are overweight and with all of other kinds of illness due to obesity to get insurance because all of the risks.  I am very happy with my decision, and I never felt better, now the same people that were negative, give me complements and they always complain about their weight to me lol.   Some of my close friends, also could not understand, they would say: you are not that big to have that surgery, or why not just do it the "hard" way dieting and exercising.  I always laughed and said ok brainny do you really did think I did not try?  Ok so if it is so easy to do this surgery why aren't you doing it?  Then they will all laugh and someone would say well I am too chicken to do it.  Don't worry about people like that, we know the risks, we made our decision.  I am here to tell you it has been 3 yrs for me and I have never regreted my decision and I always try to educate people on this awesome life changing miracle.

How funny. Good call on probing. Like jazzycats said, people tend to back off a bit when they can't support their own claims.

I had a friend try that once when I told him. He gave me the "appalled-face" and said, "I know a woman at work who had it done, and she couldn't eat anything afterward. She'd get sick and vomit every single day. It just seemed so miserable to me."

I told him that if that happened to me, then there wasn't much I could do about it, so there's no use in worrying. I'd rather take the slim chance of being miserable afterward than risk the 100% chance of contracting an obesity-related disease.

My husband and I were both denied life insurance because of obesity, and his diabetes. When an opportunity came up at work to be a small policy, no questions asked, I jumped at it. I figure my odds are way better now.

And, I actually do know someone who died from WLS. His name was John Cashner from Watertown, Wisconsin. That was 30 years ago, he was in poor health, and procedures have definitely improved.
