Hi Kelly, I really like your idea for the spreadsheet, so I am going to start one. I wanted to share my pre-op labs and let me know your thoughts! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!

Vit B1   = 7.5 (4.5-15.1)
Vit B12 = 582 (220-1100)
TSH =     1.29 (0.55-4.78)
IRON =   66 (50-170)
Albumin = 3.9 (3.5-4.8)
Tot Protein = 7.3 (6.6-8.5)

Negative H. pylori (YEAH!)
Normal UGI!!

I understand all of my labs except where all of my Vitamin and Iron and protein levels need to be for a bariatric patient. Remember, these are pre-op.

Your levels need to be the same place post op as they do pre op.

If I was you, I would want my B12 and iron higher.  It's OK where it is now, but barely OK.  If it drops just a little, you'll be in trouble.  And when you have major surgery and can't eat much for a while and might have trouble taking vitamins in the beginning, and might lose blood during surgery, it's not at all unlikely that they will drop some.  So I would start some B12 and iron now, before surgery.

Did you get your vitamin D tested?

The spreadsheet works really great.  It makes it so easy to see if something has been falling or rising, and docs usually don't compare your most recent labs to older labs to look at stuff like that.

Thanks GF! I actually got my B12 dots this week from amazon and started taking 2 /day to equal 1000mcg. What type of iron should I get, I will go this weekend. Something that I can continue post op so probably a liquid dont ya think?

OOH OOHh I forgot, my Calcium is 8.9 (8.4-10.2)
Should I start on some type of calcium now?

Also, I think they tested my D3 but it might not be back yet. I am getting excited!!

That's actually fine for calcium.  Calcium is kind of different in our labs.  Most things we like near the top of the reference range they give but with calcium low-mid range is actually good.  You can start some calcium now, it certainly won't hurt anything.  But it's not super important to do so like it is with your iron and B12.

I recommend carbonyl iron, because we absorb it really well after surgery when we have less stomach acid, and also it usually does not cause constipation.  i'm not aware of any that comes in liquid form, though.  Both Celebrate and Bariatric Advantage have chewable carbonyl.  the brand I use is Sundown Perfect Iron, and they are pills you swallow, but they are very small and I doubt you'd have trouble swallowing them even right after surgery, but that's up to you and your surgeon might recommend chewables in the beginning.  The Sundown is cheap and easy to find in stores, which is another reason I like it.

Make sure you take your iron at least two hours away from any calcium.  If you take it with vitamin C, that will increase the absorption.  You need 200 mg C for every 30 mg iron (I think the Celebrate and BA irons have C in them, but not enough to help with absorption).
