Numbness & Tingling in my leg

Ever since my most recent surgery on May 10th, I've had numbness & tingling in my right thigh. At first I thought maybe it was due to the fall I took after coming home from surgery or the shot they gave me in the hospital in that thigh, but I dunno. Its painful when I sit or walk & when I rub it, it is numb. When I saw the PA the other day she said it could be a vitamin deficiency. What vitamin would that be? All I know is its going on 2 weeks & its not any better. Anyone else experience this?

I think I would call your surgeon's office and ask that the PA give you a call and ask them what vitamin it could be and what you should do about it.    Geez....can't believe that they just left you hanging like that.     IMHO...it could be due to the fall....you could have a pinched nerve.   Hope you get better soon.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

sometimes people get tingly toes or fingers from B12 or B1 deficiencies. I have heard of being kind of numb for a couple of months because of the way they were laying on the operating table though so hopefully that is your deal.

If you have vomiting issues you can be more likely to have a B1 deficiency. Are you taking your B12 sublinguals? You could throw in a B complex (make sure it has B1). B Complex's smell and tast horrible, look for capsules. I used to take 2 B50 capsules

hope it clears up!

It could be any number of things.  I know you're probably sick of getting medical attention by this point, but it sounds like you should probably get it checked out.

Your doctor should be able to order some labs to see what you might be low on.  I'm really surprised that they didn't check.

B12, most likely .  Possibly B1 or copper.

I have this in my left leg on the outside of the calf to the top of the foot... PA said it has nothing to do with the surgery and suggests a neurologist - but I am 11 months out and it just started about 3 months ago.  It's frustrating.  Kelly, do you know how much B1 and copper we need/should take?  I give myself 1cc B-12 injection each month.  Thanks

200% of the recommended daily allowance, whatever that is.  I don't know it off the top of my head.  Unless you are low in one of those things, in which case you'd need more.  If you're almost a year out, it's almost time for you to get labs done, so make sure you get your B1 (thiamine) and copper checked.

There is a very good chance it does have to do with your surgery.  It could be due to B1, B12 and rarely copper.

Everyone should be taking 100mg of vitamin B1 daily to keep levels normal and if there is a deficiency, you need to take more - I had a deficiency in B1 from about 4 months out and I have been taking 300mg daily every since and I am 3 1/2 years out now.  B1 deficiency is very dangerous - it can cause nerve damage and can also cause cognitive damage - very similar to B12 deficiency. You need a lab test to determine - you want to be att the top of the level or over the top - if you are towards the bottom - you need to take between 200-300mg daily to get your levels up and continue at that level to maintain - there is no danger in being too high - you just pee out the excess.

Vitamin B12 - just like B1 - it is very dangerous to have a deficiency  - you can develop nerve damage and if left too long can become permanent and also lead to congnitive problems.  The normal range for a non surgical patient is 200-900 but for us, we need our levels to be up around 1200-1800 minimum and it can go higher - you just pee out the excess - but too low - below 500 puts you at risk for nerve damage.  You said you are taking an injection once month but many need to take them as much as weekly or even 2 times per week, so you really need to get your level checked because once you have symptoms - you most likely have a severe deficiency in either B12 or B1 or both.

Also, copper is a possibily but it usually further out - you need 2 tests - copper and ceruloplasmin - if copper is high - you need the ceruloplasmin to determin if it is toxicity or wilsons disease and if it is low - it is due to a deficiency.

the other possibilty is if you have pain down your leg, it can start up in your thigh and radiated down the thigh into the calf and sometimes goes all the way to the foot - this can be a sign of spinal problems.  This would require an MRI of the spine.  I would see your PCP and ultimately either a pain management doctor or a neurologist.

Hi - I am experiencing numbness that was in my leg, getting worse and now moving to my arm on the same side.  Since my labs look normal the doctor said I didn't need to increase my vitamins.  I don't buy it... how much B1 and B12 do you take per day?  I am so frustrated right now it isn't even funny... I can't believe that the people here on OH know more about this than my doctor.  Thank you.  Pam
