?'s for your surgeon...

I could have sworn there was a checklist of questions to ask your surgeon during the surgical consult, but anyway, what questions did you ask your surgeon during the consult? Anything you wished you had asked?
Is this your first appt with the surgeon?
It mostly depends, I think, on what you already know and what you don't know and want to know. But I would ask about his rate of complications and his mortality rate, ask what surgery he thinks would be best for you and why, ask what tests you need to have before you can have surgery and if you need to attend any kind of pre op education classes at his office, etc.
At some point I would ask stuff like how many nights you should expect to be in the hospital, maybe ask if you'll have a drain after surgery and if so, for how long. I would ask if he tests for leaks in the OR or if he waits until the next day to do a barium swallow.
If you still have your gall bladder, at some point I would ask if he recommends Actigall post op to prevent gall stones. I wish I had known about that when I had surgery! I would have asked my doc to prescribe it and probably would not have ended up having my gall bladder removed ten months post op.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.

Thanks for jogging my memory! I should have clarified that this is my surgical consult before surgery. I already met him months ago, and he went over all of his stats during the orientation meeting and our initial appointment.
