Sporadic Upper right quadrant pain
I had my RNY surgery 2 years ago and have lost #120. I feel better than I have in years but for the past 6-8 months I have had sporadic upper right quadrant pain - it is excrutiating and nothing seems to help but time. It usually starts either in my back through to just below my breast (ribs) or it starts int he front radiating to the back. This happens occasionally - no rhyme or reason. Yesterday it started again but this time down low by my apendix and in the middle of the night I was woken up by the usual right quadrant pain.
REading internet information I thought perhaps it was a gall bladder issue being in the same area but none of the other symtoms fit. I have had a gall bladder ultra sound as well as a CCK-Hyda test - both which turned up no indication of gall bladder problem. I have an upper scope of my stomach scheduled in two weeks but I am concerned about there being some other reason this is ocurring like trapped air, ulcer, pancreas issues - I dont know.
I am at a loss, am in pain again today and was wondering if anyone here has had this similar problem and any stories as to how their pain was resolved.
Thank you - I am at my wits end!

The symptoms do sound like gall stones. I don't know about the CCK test, but can't there be sludge that causes gall bladder inflammation without distinct stones?
I'm sure your physician has discussed it with you. It's hard to pinpoint, isn't it, since pain can refer from one place to another. Keep after your doc to get this diagnosed!

I know you have probably had EGD's done but what about a hiatal hernia? Mine did not show up with egd, but did during surgery and my surgeon repaired it. I had similar attacks over the last two years but in epigastric area and into my back. So incredibly severe. The week before my rny, had episode that lasted an hour and a half!! I had my gallbladder out 4.5 years ago but they thought stone in duct or sludge and I had to have an mrcp- showed nothing thank goodness. Dr. Alley said he is confident that the pain was from the hiatal hernia and I should not have the problem again. Hiatal hernias can be sliding so they don't always show on EGD. Good luck

I have had another attack that landed me in the hospital. I have now had an upper scope (which showed that my bariatric dr. did a fabulous job on my RNY), xrays of everything and today a lower bowel series which turned up nothing.
I am at my wits end and cannot figure out how to handle this. The pain is not often but when it happens, its getting worse and worse. The last episode lasted over 20 hours.
Has anyone heard of anyone else having these issues from RNY?
Thanks

Not trying to beat a dead horse but exactly what tests did they do regarding your gallbladder? Because it sure sounds a lot like a gallbladder issue. My blood tests did not show any issues but when they did an ultrasound it came back sludgy. When they took out the gallbladder it was full of little ity bitty stones. No more pain. I'm sorry you are going thru this, I hope they come up with a solution soon!
