Can anyone tell me why an EGD is required before weight loss surgery? And, if you have had one, I would love for you to share your experience.

they are checking to see if you have a hernia.

They did one on me on the operating table just before they started to surgery. I was asleep so didn't bother me. I understand they are looking for a hernia and other obstructions that might cause you a problem. I would ask your surgeon if it could be done on the same day as your surgery so as not to have an extra step in there that would cause you stress.

They are also looking at the integrity of the stomach lining.  They will also take biopsies of your stomach lining.

I had mine and it went fine.  it doesnt take long at all, like 30 mins if that.  you are out for the procedure.  you will have a scratchy throat when you wake up but that is it.

I had TWO of these. The first one was to do a biopsy of the stomach to check for any infections and for obstructions, My doc said it was to make sure all was okay, so there were no surprises once they do the surgery. My 1st EGD showed I tested positive for the bacteria H Pylori and so I had to take 3 or 4 antibiotics for 2 weeks. The 2nd EGD was done to see if it was in the walls of the stomach & just got the test results and test negavie for the infection. But I have a moderate size hiatal hernia. Which will be corrected at the time of the surgery (this sometimes will cause GERD/AcidReflux). The 1st one was a breeze....was gabbing & seemed like seconds later I was in recovery...a bit tired but that was it. The 2nd one (which my RNY surgeon did) I had a sore throat for a couple of days, but that was it. Zip, zap....done and over before I knew it.
