The Not So High Price of Vitamins
have seen several posts in various forums about the cost of vitamins post op. Newbies wonder if they can afford the lifetime expense of "all those vitamins."
Today I had a few minutes while waiting for a prescription, and did a little price checking. Here's what I discovered:
Centrum chewables: priced at 9.96 per 100. 2 per day = .20
Vitamin B1, 250 mg: priced at 3.22 per 100. 1 per day = .03
Vitamin B12 Sublingual 2500 mcg: priced at 4.88 per 60. 1 per day = .08
Biotin 1000 mcg: priced at 2.94 per 120 = .02
Citrical Petites priced at 10.92 per 200. 6 per day = .32
So let's total this up.
.67 per day.
Less, perhaps, if you find a good "buy one get one free" offer.
A bit more if you need to add iron or any other supplements specified by your doctor.
So if the expense of vitamins has you on pins and needles, look at it this way. It's way less than that drive thru whopper and coke.

I figured my vitamins add up to $1.06 per day, and I take several more things than those listed here, based on my labs. You can save even more by using a generic multi and calcium citrate.
I just wanted to mention, though, that we need more than six Citracal petites. The ASMBS says we need 1500-2000 mg calcium citrate a day, and the petites have 200 mg per pill, so we'd need eight to ten a day.

It's better to spend the $$ for your daily supplements (based on your body's needs from lab reports) that to suffer the long range ( or permanent) results from not taking supplements. One woman spoke at a support group about her husband a couple of years ago. She'd just had RNY and was talking about her surgery and then began speaking about her husband. He had RNY some 3-4 years earlier. He too his vitamins for a year, felt good and felt he did not need to take them anymore. A year later he suffered siezures. He was hospitalized for a couple of months, then spent a year at home--all due to severe vitamin deficiencies. No matter what the price, just take your supplements. DAVE
