I've been on Topamax for years. They used it for my bipolar, then upped my dose when I had issues with sever migraines. I haven't had any negative side effects from it at all. My memory has always been bad, but I attribute it to being on so many meds my entire life and genetics. Noone in my family has a memory at all.

Sounds like me and my family.  Growing up I thought my name was IleneAndrewLaura because that is what my mother always called me.  I do the same thing now with my kids except I have 5 of them.  And the worse part is I have a hard time remembering my kids spouses names.  I keep wanting to call my one DIL Anna, which is my son's baby mama's name and I want to call my SIL Steven, which is his step brother's name, who happened to be my daughter's first husband.  Mostly I just keep my mouth shut so I don't put my foot in it.

That's so funny! My parents used to goo through all our names too. Now, my mom just calls us the number pertaining to our birth order. If we call her at work or leave a message with my dad, we have to just tell them our number so she knows who called. lol. With my dad, everyone is just Carla. I guess I should feel priviledged that everyone is me. lol.

I was put on topamax for migraines and had to stop. I had the "Dopamax" fog, but the worst part was that my emotions became a roller coaster. Poor hubby didn't know if I was going to be a crabby pants or a puddle of tears!  I didn't care for it at all, but some people seem to tolerate it ok.

I was on it for a couple years and didn't notice any mental haze or loss of memory.  I had botox treatments for migranes and they worked to relieve the muscle spasms that were triggering off the nerves.  I then had surgery to remove the muscles and nerves in those trigger areas.  I got off the topamax after my surgeries but I noticed the migraines coming back with more frequency.  I have started back on it and I haven't noticed any mental problems or loss of memory.  I really think it depends on the person and the dosage,

I was on Topamax for 3 months. I felt perpetually stupid- I couldnt have a normal conversation, couldn't think. It was awful.

That being said, it may be entirely different for you. : /

I had to put my two cents in because I was also on Topamax for years.  I think my side effects were pretty mild, but I couldn't handle it anymore - and the topamax stopped preventing my migraines as well!

Even taking it for the years, I still had the mental fog.  I had trouble connecting words together, or remembering the right word for something, and god forbid I was asked to answer a question immediately for work - I just couldn't connect the things in my head.  Now, this is really frustrating for a consultant that is supposed to have all the answers!

I didn't have any of the (nice!) weight loss side effects, but then again I never get that on meds.  Seems like every medicine I add to my arsenal just makes me gain MORE weight.

My neurologist now has me on 2,000 mg of Keppra a day.  It seems to be helping .

I have seen a neurologist for close to 10 years, and nothing has ever shown up on the MRIs/MRAs/Sleep Studies, etc that can cuase migraines - but a GOOD neurologist will help you even if nothing shows up.
