Post RNY Hypoglycemia
I think that it started about 1 year out, but I didn't figure out what was happening for another 6 months. I have never been a sweet eater, but too many carbs are the problem that brought it to light. Losing too much weight had me trying to eat more, and no****ching carbs as much. It seems that my body is becoming more and more sensitive....

I began to suspect it at about a year out, but didn't really confirm it until I was at year three. It wasn't too bad, but I didn't hardly eat all that much, then the Christmas before my 3rd surgiversary we were on a cross country drive, hubby, me and dad, and one night when the temperature was below freezing outside, and our hotel room had a faulty heater, so it was cold in the room, I woke up sweating like a dog, my heart racing fit to jump out of my chest, and I was confused. I remembered that it could be RH, so I grabbed a nut bar (one of my meals for on the road the next day) and I basically crammed it down my gullet and added something else with sugar and within 10 minutes I began to feel better. Before I felt better, I timed my heart and it was literally beating 4 beats per second, 240 per minute. I thought I was going to die.
I've never had a blood sugar episode that took 45 minutes to feel better. It always works damn fast.

Please share any info you get, as I also have a hard time with hypoglycemia. My doc's office has been very helpful, but I'm always on the lookout for any new information.
My hypoglycemia started at about 4 months out, and is not always in response to eating carbs. I need to eat small, frequent meals that also contain some (but not too many carbs). Without any carbs, my blood sugar crashes when I exercise, and I'm not willing to give up that.
I'd glad my doc hasn't suggested steriods - those are really hard on bone density, and I already have osteopenia.

The Dr who I am seeing name is Dr. Mary-Elizabeth Patti. She has done several studies and written papers on this issue post bariatric surgery. I will keep you (and others) informed on what I learn. Google her for more info

how long after eating do you usually feel the effects?

Mine can be 30 minutes if I've been super naughty (thin slice of 7 layer chocolate cake?) or slow if it's a matter of forgetting to consume calories (I'm nearly always imbibing calories, I generally don't go more than thirty minutes without some kind of calorie -- mostly my 1.5 g of carb protein shake)
But if I forget to eat... I once had an hour long telephone conversation after breakfast, and I literally had to tell the person "my blood sugar is dropping, I better go" and I tested my blood sugar and it was 32.
Another time I was prepping for a class I was teaching (with 52 kids) and for the following class (with 52 kids) trying to get some mandated tests in order to give the kids, and the next thing I knew I was crashing bad. I had something immediately, but it wasn't really a surprise that the "test prep" for my last hour of kids was all messed up, and I hadn't put the tests in the right order after all. If I'm not drinking my protein shake pretty mucch all the time, if I stop imbibing ccalories I have issues, particularly if I've had too much carbs. But it's not as much of a problem now that I've elminated a LOT of carbs from my diet. Quiche is my staple, once or twice a day, I usually have full fat FAGE yoghurt with some low glycemic index berries at some point, and I have snap peas and cheese crumbles, and marinated artichoke hearts (unmarinaded don't have enough fat and I tank?!) as my "going to sleep pillow snack." If I don't have a pillow snack I'm more likely to get up in the night with a blood sugar crash, but I take pills that pretty much knock me out for the night, so it's dangerous to NOT eat a proper snack before bedtime.
