What has to be done before bypass

So I go this Friday to my PCP to get a referal to a new surgeon for my revision from band to bypass. With the lapband I didnt have to do much before hand. I had to see a phychologist once for a about 30 minutes. Same with the Dietician once for about 30min. I didnt have to go on any kind of a diet before my surgery ( however my doctor said he had a difficult time becasue he didnt expect my liver to be to fatty and it was) I was 372 at the time of my surgery. So my question is with getting the bypass what did you all have to do before hand before surgery. I dont know if the stuff you have to do I had was different because it was the lapband or if maybe some surgeons just require different things. Excited to start this journey again and this time with a doctor that sticks around after surgery and helps and cares about me.

My surgeon recommended losing as much weight beforehand as possible and put me on what I thought was a clear liquid diet for seven days prior.  (some surgeons require longer, so check with your surgeon) Later found out I misunderstood and could have had creamed soups, pudding, jello, etc. but it worked out all the better.  The bypass is definitely more involved than the lapband and you want it to go as smoothly as possible.  There are some that have to be opened up the "old fashioned" way if they get in there and find that the liver is too fatty, etc. and that is much longer recovery, worse scarring, higher chance of complications, etc. There are some that once they get in there and find too much fat on the liver and stuff they just close them up and tell them they have to come back.  NOT GOOD!!  Just follow your surgeons instructions the best you can.

It will depend on your surgeon and what he likes done and what your insurance company requires.  My insurance required very little, but my surgeon required that all patients attend a class on nutrition at his office (which provided little useful information and some info that was just plain not accurrate), an appointment with the dietician, a psych eval, an endoscopy, a chest xray, an EKG, blood work, and a complete physical by my PCP.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Ditto what poet_kelly said as well.  Most of that I also had to do.

I was required to do all of what Kelly said for the most part.  I did NOT have to have an endoscopy, but I did have to have an upper GI series.  I also had to have an overnight sleep study (to assess sleep apnea) and a pulmonary function test and a stress test.  I attended 3 pre-surgery weight loss visits with surgeon and nutritionist, a 2 hour nutrition class once surgery was scheduled and a required support group.  Of course, there was blood work, chest x-ray, a 32 page psychological questionnaire and a 90 minute assessment with a psychologist.   I am diabetic so I had to have clearance from my endocrinologist.  Because I am diabetic, I was NOT required to do any sort of restricted diet prior to surgery though.

Good luck!!

That mostly depends on your surgeon and insurance company.  Since I was a revision I actually had less to do than normal.

I only had to have Cardiology clearance with an ekg and stress test, upper GI series, chest x-ray, blood work and 2 week liquid diet preop.

I was a self-payer, but my surgeon required:

3 classes prior to surgery
Monthly support groups-post surgery
A pre-op 1,000 calorie diet
Due to a heart condition, he required an EKG
