Numb spot on leg after RNY?
So I had my RNY 4/28/12 and when I woke up I noticed that my right upper thigh, in an area about 5in x 7in, was completely numb, no feeling at all when i poked it. When I asked my surgeon about it later he said that's where a grounding pad was placed to ground the electrical current that's used when cutting the slits into patients. He said not to worry that some people had that reaction and that the nerve endings were irritated but would eventually go back to normal. Throughout the two and a half months some feeling has come back and when i press on it or exercise there's a pain sensation sometimes, sometimes certain spots feel normal, and other spots are still completely numb. I have asked my surgeon at every follow up about it and all he says is to give it time that it will go back to normal, that there really isn't anything to do or take for it. I'm really worried that I have nerve damage and that it will never be normal again. Have any other RNY's experienced this? Any advice? It's really irritating. Even the spots on my stomach where my incisions were that used to be numb aren't numb anymore.
I didn't have any after my RNY, but had a numb spot on my hip after a knee arthroscopy in the 80's. Lasted a couple of years in total, but the degree lessened over time. My surgeon said it was from positioning on the OR table. Perhaps a neurologist, or ortho doc would be a better resource for your numbness than a general surgeon.
RNY on 05/16/12
Oh funny! I had forgotten completely about that little spot and it came back to life after a couple weeks and I just didn't ever think about it again. Nice to know it was really there and why! It must just be like everything else, and depend on the person's own body chemistry and nerve status that determines how fast it goes away. The symptoms you report sound similar to other stories of nerve healing/regeneration I have heard. Maybe your area just received a little extra zap the day of surgery and is just taking a bit longer to heal? Unless it is affecting your activity or gets larger, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Hello MC:
Thanks very much for posting this question and for everybody's answers. I had my RNY on 5/15/12 and have numb spots on both my upper thighs that are about the same size as yours. I keep on forgetting to ask my doctor about them. They are no longer completely numb as at the beginning and the tingling and shooting pains I used to get are gone, but it is taking a long time for the sensation to return to those areas. I'm relieved to know others experienced this and that it gets better. Regards.
