Hi,  Im one week post-op and already struggeling with "head hunger".  So far, Im ok... sticking to my 2T of sugar free yogurt or sipping on a propel, or even eating a SF popsicle.  But, its making me nervous for the furture.  What techniques do you use to help combat head hunger?

Most of the time when I feel like I want to eat something, I eat something.  If I know I'm not really hungry or I think I've been taking in too many calories, then I drink something.  And I find something else to do, hopefully that will distract me.  I eat about every three hours so it's never too long before my next meal or snack, so I can usually talk myself into waiting.

I eat every 3 hrs. If it is not time to eat - I drink. Hot or cold green or herbal tea, water with flavors... etc. Then I eat... then I am stuffed and thirsty... so I patiently wait to when I can drink again...

I struggle with head hunger quite often. When it starts I have an agreement with myself. If it is going to be over half an hour before it is time to ear again I drink 16-20 of water and then wait 15 minutes. If I am still struggling I will eat something nutritious, like one serving of almonds, a quarter to half cup of cottage cheese, a small salad or half a yogurt cup. Sometimes denying yourself can lead to a binge. I find that quite often I was just thirsty and the water did the trick.

I have read that we often think we are hungry when we are really thirsty.  For me it seems like it's more about flavor sometimes, though.  If I drink something like herbal tea with a lot of flavor, I'm satisfied and don't want to eat anymore.  If I drink plain water, I still want to eat.

I a lot of times am craving a flavor as well.  I keep those Listerine breath strips with me and have one of those.  That seems to kill any craving I have because who wants to eat anything after you've had a fresh burst of mint?  If you can brush your teeth a lot of times that helps me as well.

I usually have cheese or nuts. Two or three nuts and I'm good. Or a cheese stick.

Hot drinks! Decaf coffee and tea are my best assets against grazing.

Ususally if I am head hungry, there's a reason - an emotional or physical root. It means I'm not stimulated enough, or haven't had enough activity. It means I need fulfillment or excitement or comfort. Once you start seeing it like that and working to systemically understand the reason it's happening, it becomes easier to figure out what to do about it. If it's because I haven't had enough activity, I go for a walk or a bike ride. If I'm not social enough, I go for a walk, or make a plan with a friend or hubby. If I am bored, I cultivate a hobby: do origami, sew, something to occupy my creative and intellectual hunger. If I need comfort, I do something like yoga, or cuddle with hubby, or have another hot drink, go for a massage, have a nap, play a video game.
