Can we vomit?

Today I have felt pretty ill..I've been on the verge of puking all morning..I haven't eaten anything yet but I've been trying to get some water down. In the past 7 months since surgery the only times I've thrown up is immediately following eating..due to the food either being too dry or me eating too fast/not chewing well enough. So I'm wondering if it is even possible for us to throw up if we don't have food in system? Thanks..and sorry for the gross question.

I have thrown up foamy stuff before when my pouch was empty, and when all of the foam came out I dry heaved.

I've thrown up stomach acid and bile before.  Rather gross.

I have had the "foamies" on an empty stomach, where it's saliva coming up. But you won't have bile anymore. Which is actually a huge improvement to the whole throwing up process. And very little acid, of course.

So usually, just dry heaves with possible foamies if you are on empty.

I have been unable to throw up at all since surgery, even when it really needs to come up!

If you don't have food in your system I don't see how you'd throw up. You may dry heave, which to me is worse. Maybe it's just nausea?

I've thrown up 2 times in 7 1/2 years....both times were induced by sticking my finger down my throat to get beef roast to come up (stuck).  I have felt at other times I needed to puke and couldn't; my mouth watered terribly like I was going to and nothing.

Many RNYers I know have lost their gag reflex after surgery.

I have thrown up. But, I haven't had the hiccups since my surgery.. Anybody else get them?
