Iron Supplement
Revision on 08/14/12
I wanted to ask for your post-op expericences on the subject of iron supplementation.
I'm 53; postmenopausal and am having a RNY Tuesday.
I realize I will need to take iron post op for awhile due to intraoperative blood loss (which really should be minimal if all goes well), but I am wondering about on down the line.
I talked to my surgeon about it and we are going to check levels to see what my needs are. I don't want to take it if I don't have to; I don't like constipation anymore than anyone else.
I realize we are all individuals, but I was hoping some of you might be able to comment on your experiences with this.
Thank you!!

Well, the ASMBS recommends iron for ALL post ops, including men and post menopausal women. For them, they recommend 36 mg daily.
While some forms of iron frequently cause constipation, like ferrous sulfate, not all forms of iron do. Carbonyl iron usually does not cause constipation, and it's a better choice anyway because it's absorbed better.

I am your age. I take a daily multivitamin with Iron and in addition I was prescribed Repliva. I have had great labs so far 5 years and 6 months out.... I would work very closely and get monitored by your entire medical team and also get a referral to hematology if ever any concerns arise.
Congrats on your upcoming surgery .....

I am postmenopausal. Last year my iron tanked. I needed iron infusions. I was fine for 1 year. This year I needed another series. No surgeries in between, but my body has a really hard time with any oral iron.
Take iron unless your levels are already really high.
You never know how your body will be able to absorb it and even maintaining is a challenge.
Make sure they check your ferritin levels every time. My tanked and I did not know that.

i take a ton of iron a day - but no constipation because i use carbonyl. i also get like 50 grams of fiber a day naturally so things move fine lol
but - they hurt my stomach if i haven't eaten. so i take them halfway through my protein shake
